Top 10 Smartest Animals

8. Pigeon

Pigeons are abundant in most major cities of North America, but many people think of them as mere pests. However, this ubiquitous bird is actually quite smart. Because pigeons have been the subjects of countless scientific experiments, there is a wealth of knowledge about their intellectual abilities. For example, pigeons can recognize hundreds of images even after several years have passed. They can also identify themselves in a mirror, be taught to perform a sequence of movements and to discriminate subtle differences between two objects – pretty impressive for a mere “pest.”

I am not wishing to be critical. I'd like to let those of you who are interested that the picture feature as an American Crow is actually a picture of a Common Raven.

The crow has been shown to use reason, they have a long term memory for individual faces and individual peoples behavior, they are capable of processing the need and use for tools and have a complex social structures that some scientists believe is more similar to ours than the Chimps.

This is only a list of 10 animals, so many "intelligent" ones won't make it. Most animals are more intelligent than given credit for, either because they are poorly researched, misunderstood because of OUR lack of intelligence or empathy, or the standards for rating are often biased and ethnocentric and don't consider the importance of culture and environment in intentionality of what is learned.

Although the fact that animals are so intelligent should make us treat them better, even "dumb" animals should be seen as worthy of respect. IQ, even if able to be measured adequately, should never be the sole criteria for evaluating the merit of a creature. Intelligence is an abstract term and can be measured in many different ways. There is so much that can be learned by our association with and study of all animals, even the most seemingly insignificant.

Humans think they are so smart, and yet in some sense, we are the dumbest creatures on earth. I am often amazed at how little many humans know about their own pets, let alone the ignorance of other animals. The mere fact that we can be so cruel and do not appreciate the abundance we have been given by the contribution of so many animals, is just plain senseless and stupid.

Animals are wonderful beings, very sadly too often poorly treated.
