All Natural Homemade Mouthwash Recipes

By Elizabeth Seward, Planet Green
Mouthwash is a neat little invention. It’s an easy way to feel like your mouth is totally clean and fresh smelling in a matter of seconds…and you can achieve all of this without a toothbrush on hand. It’s no wonder that mouthwash is so popular. My only question is this: Why should we grow so acquainted with pouring chemicals into our mouths, supporting the production and manufacturing of products that cause pollution, and spending money we don’t have to spend? There are natural ways to make mouthwash from items you very well may have around the house. Here are a couple recipes. Enjoy!
Spearmint
Boil 6 ounces of water and 2 ounces of vodka together. Add in 4 teaspoons of liquid glycerin and 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Remove from heat and let cool. When cooled, add 10-15 drops of Spearmint oil and shake the entire mixture together well.
Rosemary Mint
Boil 2.5 cups of water. Add in 1 teaspoon of fresh mint leaves, 1 teaspoon of rosemary leaves, and 1 teaspoon of anise seeds. Let this boil for about 20 minutes. Once it is cooled, you’ve got your mouthwash!

add your comment »Ouh this is nifty. I want to try the spearmint one. But I've never heard of using something like glycerin in something like this. Is it totally safe? I mean, some soaps have it lol.

If you have concerns about xylitol read wickapedia it will put your fears to rest.
As for it being a poison there is no evidence I do alot of research into natural products and this has been found to be safe and effective and if you read the full report you will see that the quantities used where very high and only certain dogs reacted but most did not. Every one is different and I guess every dog is to.

I have a few concerns about posts made here. I am no expert, but I'd do my research on these things:
1. Why would I consider adding Xylitol? Like other artifical sweeteners, it's a dangerous chemical to dogs; I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for humans too.
2. When you boil vodka, you are evaporating the alcohol, so I am not sure that one can deduce that the mouthwash remains antiseptic.
3. Be careful in assuming that adding Thyme has the same effect as adding a derivative of Thyme. Sometimes raw ingredients go through chemical alterations before being adding to consumer products and thus have completely different properties.

Elizabeth -
Mouthwash might give you a clean mouth feeling, but unless you are flossing and brushing, your mouth is not clean. Mouthwashes are 'effective' i.e. provide the clean mouth sensation - for about 10 minutes. Flossing and brushing IS effective - until next meal.
Some mouthwashes are suspected of causing cancer.

the spearmint one has vodka in it so it should last a while.
If in doubt keep it in the fridge then they would last at least a few weeks

Does anyone know how long these mouthwahes will last or do you need to make it fresh and use it there and then?

Try adding some Xylitol1-1 1/2tsp to mouth wash as it balances the bacteria in your mouth and helps with gum problems and helps minimise tooth decay as it kills the bacteria that causes tooth decay

One of the active ingredients in Listerine comes from Thyme, so I would think that would be another good herb to try. Thyme and eucalyptus both have plaque fighting qualities I think.
