Plastic bags and water bottles have received a lot of attention in terms of the resources they use and waste they produce. But what about paper cups? Factory Direct Promos took a look at this issue and created an infographic highlighting some pretty astonishing facts about our paper cup consumption.
So how do we make a change? Shane Shirley-Smith from FDP says:
“The cool thing about reusing cups is that both consumers and businesses can really get behind the effort to make an impact on the future health of our environment. We think it would be great if every fast food restaurant out there designed and offered their own reusable drinkware for patrons to purchase and use over and over at their restaurant and others. They could even offer free drinks or at least a discount each time folks used it. They might even offer a bigger discount if one of their competitors cups is used. Companies and organizations could even have design contests to create their brand’s reusable cups.
This can be a fun way for so many people to reduce and reuse. We can do something about this together if we demand reusables or begin to bring our own cups when we buy a drink.”

Sometimes you just have no choice but to buy the cup of coffee, but I try to save these cups and refill them as much as I can before discarding (sometimes the paper cups last upto 7 or so refills). I also use my old cups to put trash into, since I am the only one in my office, and at the end of the day I just throw that away in the big public bin and avoid the big plastic bag in my office having to be thrown away with the couple of items that accumulate. If there's a lot of trash, I use the lunch bags I stow in my drawers. There is always a gentler way of dealing with things if we just put a bit of thought into it.
It's good to make good use of things we see everyday
Thanks
Thanks, shared
good way of showing the impact
Good info, thank you.
Good info, thank you.
Don't use throwawayable cups, they make the water taste funny. Mom uses reusable cups for her morning coffee on the run, sadly my brother keeps taking them and never bringing them back so she has to go out and buy new ones. But no throwawayable cups. If we go one a trip, she takes cups that are for certain gas stations that have reusable cup choices and uses hers.
I purchased these things called drink dots awhile back to see if it could help 'train' my family to reuse their cups... :) It worked great! Anyway, they are really nice vinyl decals that you can pick a shape, color, and customize with text (I did an initial for each family member). My 4 kids love having their own spot for their cup. The site is: http://drinkdots.com
Hope this is useful.
