Why You Should Adopt a Black Cat

Why You Should Adopt a Black Cat

Despite the worldwide bias against black cats, there are many famous people who have opened their hearts and homes to cats the color of midnight: Fred Astaire, Edgar Allen Poe, Ernest Hemingway, Queen Victoria, King Charles I, Winston Churchill†and Calvin Coolidge to name just a few. So, if you have a fondness for the cat adorned in a sleek and sophisticated ebony coat you are in good company.

Unfortunately, black cats — who have historically been associated with witchcraft and bad luck — are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. Unfair, but true. To deal with this reality, rescue groups, like the Humane Society, actually host special Adopt-a-Black-Cat events to highlight the bias against black cats.

Other concerned citizens have created rescue groups specifically for black cats.†For example, Jennifer Stott started Black Cat Rescue in Boston after hearing the dire statistics of black cats in shelters. She organized a network of foster homes that specifically take in black cats and then post their photos online via Facebook and Petfinder. One of the barriers she noticed right away to black cat adoption is that they are difficult to photograph: “So much of the adoption game takes place online now, and [black cats] donít photograph very well. Itís very challenging to get a good face shot of a black cat, because their features tend to kind of all blur together.”

Los Angeles pet photographer Seth Casteel, understands this dilemma intimately and thus launched a free nationwide nonprofit program called Second Chance Photos that offers tips on how to take engaging photos of black cats and dogs. For example, black cats should be photographed on light colored blankets or backgrounds and in brightly lit surroundings.

To highlight the beauty of black cats, and just in time for magic and mystery of Halloween, I have collected a number of wonderful photos of black cats and kittens. Accompanying these photos are the TOP TEN reasons you should adopt a black cat!

TOP TEN REASONS TO ADOPT A BLACK CAT

1. Black cats are the least likely to be adopted.

2. Holding a black cat is very slimming.

3. Black cats do not care what color your hair is!

4. Black cats are sleek and sophisticated.

5.†A lint brush is not required for a black-tie affair.

I found an abandoned black feral kitten who was too young to eat on his own. I fed him kitten milk from a small bottle and that was four wars ago! He is a very faithful and lovingkitty and we are blessed to have him as a pet.

I love black cats so much! I wish I could rescue them all! My aunt had a black cat and she had to be very careful not to let it outside, as she always heard people make rude comments about her "unlucky" cat... she was afraid someone might try to hurt him if he got outside. Thank you for posting this!

People love black cats in Australia. In fact they are the first to go in s litter and tabbies are probably the last to go. People think it's cool to have a black cat here but most also just think they are beautiful. Many do think they are lucky or have s special good energy. Australia is s very secular county and not superstitious or connected to any religious beliefs
We have s black cat and she is not only beautiful to look at but sweet natured
