Bridget, a 10-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, sadly lost her two pups just after they were born on April 23rd. But in an interesting twist of fate, a litter of orphaned kittens arrived to the Utah Humane Society on nearly that same day. An employee placed the motherless kittens with Bridget hoping that maybe the Yorkie’s unfulfilled natural mothering instincts would kick in and override the fact that instead of puppies she would now nurture kittens. And sure enough, that is exactly what happened! (I love happy endings, dont you?!)
A dog mothering kittens is really not such a surprise — and many such stories abound — especially in comparison to the story of the Burmese woman who nursed two tiger cubs!
I do wonder, however, how having a canine for a mother will affect the behavior, preferences, personalities and growth of the felines? Will the kittens grow into cats who act half-dog? Will other cats think these dog-mothered kittens are odd in their behavior? Will these kittens grow up fearless of dogs? Will they show a preference for doggie treats? If you have your own anecdotal stories to share of kittens being mothered by a dog or visa versa, please share!

Glad they all have a happy ending! (but as others have noted, who lets their 10 year old dog get pregnant?!)
Good article ans sweet picture...
Thank you for sharing.
Great. Thanks.
Besides the fact that the dog and kittens ended up at a shelter, I'm terribly disturbed by the fact that the dog had a litter of puppies at age 10! What is wrong with people to breed a dog at that age? Was she a puppy mill dog? It's sad that her puppies died, but she's incredibly lucky that having a litter at that age didn't kill her.
Thanks for sharing this story and sweet picture...
So sweet....yorkies are very loving, loyal and caring...why are they (dog and kitten) at a shelter???
