Environmental groups on Saturday condemned Canada's decision to boost its annual quota for seal hunting, warning that with an expected European ban on any seal products the increase makes little sense.

Thank you Cher.
The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans has confirmed that
Canada's commercial seal slaughter will officially open before sunrise Monday,
March 23. Weather permitting, the killing will begin and Humane Society
International will be there to document it. "With a vote on banning seal
product trade pending in the European Parliament, the eyes of the world are on
the Canadian seal kill," said Rebecca Aldworth, director of HSI/Canada.
"Behind the slick PR lines of the Canadian government lies the bloody reality
of this cruel slaughter, and we intend to show it to the world."
The Canadian government has ignored sound science by setting a recklessly
high quota for this year's kill. Sealers can club and shoot 338,200 seals - an
increase of 55,000 from last year's quota. The 2009 quota includes 280,000
harp seals, 50,000 grey seals and 8,200 hooded seals. Independent scientist
have warned the high kill levels, paired with the impacts of global warming on
ice-dependent harp seals, pose a serious threat to the survival of seal

This is Canada's shame for the rest of the world. It is high time it was stopped as it appears the majority of Canadians wish it was. Come on, Mr Harper, embrace the 21st century and finally put an end to this barbaric hunt which is only about vanity and votes and stop using MY tax dollars to sustain it.

As a heart just sinks at this time of year....I am appalled...embarrassed and OUTRAGED that Conservative member Steven Harper continues to allow these barbaric murders every year!!! Anyone who voted for this individual (NOT ME, that's for sure) should share part of the blame for these seal deaths, that is for break is just breaking for what is about to occur in a matter of hours...the pristine white snow as it now looks...will turn BLOOD RED as these precious little souls began to be bludgeoned to death........I am just sooooo sorry...I am soooo sorry dear little souls...we continue to fight against these cruel cruel people.....

This hike in numbers is purely a knee jerk reaction to all of the pressures to stop the hunt and the EUs ban. There beautiful animals belong to the whole world, not just Canada. No country should have the right to push an animal to extinction. Isn't it time that the world officially blockades Canada!

'Weather permitting...' Let's pray for a blizzard so those heartless b*****s cannot get to the poor, harmless, helpless little babies. Has Canada become the new China? Not a very admirable achievement in my book.

Nothing will stop these monsters except being hit in the pocket.
Boycott all Canadian products but in paricular the sea food industry as it's the fishermen who get paid by the Canadian sea food industry to do the task in their off season.
Let's face it if people did not buy fur we would not have a fur trade in the world, therefore, people need to see the graphic footage and be educated. THIS NEEDS TO BE STARTED AT SCHOOL, so the next generation does not use fur of ant sort.

I do believe Canada has become the New China. Democracy has failed entirely. The government is not listening to it's own Country. They are listening to 6 000 fishermen who are wealthy and complaining and ignoring the remaining 30 million citizens...

The Canadian Government is corrupt and barbaric - they are fully aware of public sentiment regarding this slaughter and simply choose to ignore it as usual. After all, the Cod fishery went under with the supervision of the same bunch of "rocket scientists". Why do we keep reelecting them?

How can conservative member Steven Harper continue to allow these barbaric and inhumane, rituals and killings to go on every year? I do not understand why something cannot be done about this man's spineless decision! It saddens me to think that those innocent baby seals will die in the name of of few greedy fisherman?! Where is your "BACK BONE" Canadian Government Officials? Cant anyone of you problem solve and find a solution for this ongoing slaughter of innocent lives? Since when is Canada controlled by a group of fisherman? The majority of your peoples has spoken up "AGAINST" these killings. Take back your country, and your pride out of the hands and pockets of these few greedy fisherman!! Like Susan B. says: THIS TRUELY IS CANADA'S SHAME FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD. Everyone is watching you...and the majority WILL not rest until justice for those innocent animals is served!
