One of the most vexing problems that animal advocates face is fighting animal cruelty that is justified by reference to religious traditions. David has written about the problem here. A not so well known instance where there is a clash between religion

The attempt to justify anything involving animal abuse in the name of religion is perverse or a good reason to espouse atheism. As these particular people claim to be Christians it would be interesting to see their Biblical or theological justification for such barbarity. This must be another group of Christians that would not recognise Jesus if he rode up on his Harley with his long hair flowing or arrived at their church driving a truck. Interestingly there was an item on the UK TV news to day about the citizenship criteria for immigrants to the UK before getting a British passport arranged with a points system. Marks for speaking English, being a taxpayer, doing good work in the community. Nothing about having to abuse animals though! So perhaps these individuals should remember they are welcomed into various countries and should not seek to overturn the welcoming countries tradition of animal welfare by importing their barbarity, we all have quite enough of our own in each country without the need to import more! Seems to me they have caught the use the tradition/religion etc card bug, if you want to justify something that is unjustifiable!

I hope they find a way to prove they are not using velcro and that it's cruel and can remove the allowance of it... :( Thanks Cher!

What religion condones bullfighting? I think most Portugese are practicing Catholics. As far as I remember bullfighting isn't a part of it! As far as tradition, most of the Portugese in the San Joaquin Valley have been her for decades! I know I was born and raised there and knew many Portugese families! They would NEVER condone this!
