The good news: Four men were arrested after a vehicle inspection yielded two recently butchered rhino horns and a .303 rifle. The bad news: KwaZulu Natal has now lost 19 rhino to poachers this year.

After seeing these animals in the wild I can not believe that anyone would want to kill them! When they trot anywhere near your car your whole car shakes! They are AWESOME!! The big problem is the international market, I watched a clip from a South African program on this today called 50/50 they do have a face book page if anyone would like to see it.

Unfortunately until we deal with consumer demand there will always be poachers willing to take a chance for a quick buck. Whilst we have people out there (mainly in the Middle and Far East) with more money than brains, who believe that compressed animal hair will give them an erection, poaching of rhino will go on. Virtually all of the governments in countries ranging from Africa through the Middle East to China and Japan give only token support to wildlife preservation legislation whilst openly condoning traditional "medicine" and ethnic rights that demand animal products for their so-called medicine. It is the usual money and power politics game. We have a “Catch 22” situation in that as rhino populations decrease with habitat loss, increasing rarity of horns will boost value and trade. Whilst it would be tempting to advocate the annihilation of the entire chain from poachers through dealers to consumers, it probably would not go down well in certain quarters. The only long-term solution would be population control and the education of people into valuing other forms of life other than their own. I fear that by the time we get to achieving that wild rhino will just be a memory.
