Now a referendum before the Catalan Parliament would end bullfighting here altogether. There has long been talk in this part of Spain about a total prohibition on toreo. Fans have played it down. But this time, even aficionados think a ban is likely to

I agree there are many traditions in countries that need to be kept alive.

but to keep a tradition of cruelty alive is wrong. when a tradition is seeped in animal cruelty it is time to put an end to the tradition.

bullfighting is cruel, inhumne and barbaric. the bull is drugged, straved for days and often kept in pitch blackness for days before a fight. this is not even a fair fight for the bull.

the matadors are not macho or great bullfighters, they are simply legal bull torturers.

Organized cruelty is despicable and it demeans the entire society. It also endangers all animals and people who must interact with the violent and cruel and abusive people.

First of all, this is not a long tradition. The romans started the whole thing, and it ended a long time ago, but when the french came to try to conquer Spain some new ways and practices appeared, one of them being bullfights. It's only a 200 and something year old practice. Not a tradition, but some families who own land and vineyards, such as Osborne, have a lot of power and $$, they are called mafia taurina. They had their glory when people had nothing as entertainment after the war, and then when Spain "modernized" itself, discos and other things, it started to go away...so the mafia taurina pulled their strings and $$ and gave it a huge impulse where they would fill the rings with people from asylums, retirement homes and such for free, putting these bullfights on TV that were full of people...idiots follow ( most bullfighters can't even readand they speak really badly) trying to give themselves a little "glory", and fame.
Bulls are locked up in the dark with no food and water, and are being bled for days, the purpose is to make them anemic, so when they come out to the ring they are weak and blinded from the sun, appearing to be a strong animal that is angry.

What is appaling is that out of all the "cultural" tortures, the least cruel is the bullfight.
