The shocking survey found that when asked to name a series of animals, more than half of children aged between four and 12 struggled to recognise a crocodile while 44 per cent were unable to identify a leopard.

That comes as no surprise to me. My daughter, who is obviously intelligtent because she is a doctor now, was taught 300 ways to cook Brazil nuts in social studies. They neglected to teach her where South America is. The Britsh schools do not fare any better in giving the most basic information to their young ones.

Unreal!!! This proves how incredibly disconnected so many people are to the earth and the whole natural world.Very disturbing and no wonder there are so many violent acts against animals.
Thanks Cher

Can't say too much about this because so many Americans can't speak intelligently about much of anything these days. Most cannot name their Senators and House member or the Judges on the Supreme Court or the Governor of their own state or explain the three branches of government here and describe the reasons for separation of powers. We just had a vice-presidential candidate who couldn't even get the job description of the US Vice-President right and she didn't have any idea what the First Amendment to our Constitution says either.
So while I think this is a sad commentary on the state of education in the UK, I am not up for throwing any stones because we're so pitiful here ourselves.

This is not a new phenonena when I was at school in Britain sometime in the Middle Ages if it hadn't been for the milkman's horse many urban British kids would not have seen an animal other than birds, cats and dogs. I seem to remember that at that time the great majority of Britons had not travelled more than 20-30 miles from where they were born.
While on the subject of the UK and ignorance; a poll asked what was the most significant event in British history in the last 100 years and the majority of respondants said the death of Princess Diana.
Mind you I remember a study a couple of decades ago that found a surprising number of Americans (I can't remember the figure) didn't know the name of their president; not a fate shared by Barack Obama I would dare to suggest.
