This week, 17-year-old Nunavut hunter Jupi Angootealuk survived three days on an ice floe and the unwanted attentions of a fully grown female polar bear accompanied by a pair of cubs. Angootealuk shot the female dead

THE ARTICLE ENDS WITH:

"It is not legal to kill a female with cubs on a hunt. Angootealuk's self-defence killing of a mother bear is permissible under the protection of life clause, but it may cost his community up to three tags.

"They're going to go out and get that (slain adult) bear, skin it and eat it," Williams said.

If the local wildlife officer can reach the cubs on the ice floe, he will travel out by boat and kill them. He may also delegate that duty to local hunters. The meat and fur from the cubs is especially prized.

"I haven't seen the size of (her surviving) cubs, but if the cubs are under 2 years old, they each get a tag put on them ... if they're this year's cub, they lose a half-a-tag each."

The reduced tag cost reflects the likelihood that very young cubs may die naturally in any case.

In a case like this, no effort is made to save the cubs, regardless of age.

"There's no shortage of bears," said Williams."

I wonder if this young man also follows all the rest of the traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. No electricity, no medical care past leeches and blood-letting, no personal hygiene but home made soap, all home made clothes and weapons, no batteries for radios or lights, no radio or other telecommunications - I bet not. I bet he only keeps the cruel and brutal tradition that makes him lots of money - blood money.
To kill a mother bear standing with her cubs to protect them - wow, what kind of a man does that? A small, cowardly, despicable, worthless and brutal man who is unbelievably cruel and heartless. Wow, how do people crawl down to that level of evil? How does anyone who lives in the 21st century stay so dishonest as to claim the right to kill a mother and her babies.
It would be great to have a little instant Karma right now. But still, I suppose it will come in its own time and those who behave this way will be treated accordingly.

Will you city-slickers stop the nonsense.

was he supposed to let himself be eaten?

And Polar bears aren't endangered because there are between 22-24,000 of them.

What I want to say I cannot say here. So,here's the question. How close is too close?Maybe the mother polar bear was checking to see if her cubs were in danger.Which they were. This excuse for a human being shot her in cold blood. He was after the babies and he plans to "tag" them and kill them in the future. They are so worried about losing a "tag" and the babies are worth only half a tag.The polar bears are endangered.I hope the orphaned babies can survive on their own.Do you think the hunter cares? He plans to go back and kill them too. This is 2009 and this is why we need to educate the obviously uneducated, ignorant hunters.RIP mama polar bear.

If it was attacking, he should shoot in self defense. But if it's just "too close"...I wonder if he wasn't a little trigger happy? But he's only 17, I wonder if more experienced hunters have ways of avoiding these situations altogether.

Right on, JennyLynn! I'd send you a green star if I could!

Judy, your willful ignorance astounds me. Why do you come here? Clearly not to be enlightened.

Well thats about how much you know about some of us Ms. foot...I for one am not a city slicker....not a dirt farmer either...LOL Were ranchers...

As you can all tell with ms. foot we got under her collar again...this is how she likes to attack and I will and do give it back to her full fold...LOL

Oh like we should trust anything she says...

The story says enough boy kills beautiful bear, a hunter with fear.

The NAZIs thought they were "enlightened" too.

The young man grew up there, he was stuck on an ice flow for 3 days being stalked by the bear.

It was not a case of "mistaken identity" and the 3 kills are being deducted from future allowable kills.

Here's the story from the CBC about the rescue of the 17 year old. One of the comments was:

"This is for those against the shooting of the Polar bear. IT's A POLAR BEAR...focus on the BEAR part. They are meateaters, and they can be really mean. They eat anything alive in the north. If you haven't been within 100 yards of a these monster size animals, then you have no place to say whether or not the boy made the right choice. If he didn't shoot that bear and it decided to charge him...the boy would be dead. Good call son, better the bear than you as far as I'm concerned."
and
"Im sure the Bear was hungry and would of eaten the 17 year kid if he had the chance. To the bear the kid was just another meal and understandably the kid had to shoot the bear in self defence. Im sure the outcome would've been much different if the gun wasn't with him."

and best of all, it seems the cubs are old enough to fend for themselves and were not killed.

"For those who would like to know the outcome for the cubs. Those cubs were old enough to fend for themselves and are now using the tools the mother bear taught them. They were old enough to be off on their own and live the life of a POLAR BEAR. So Quit all your crying for the bears and start clapping with joy that the Boy is safe."

JUDY READ ATHE ARTICLE THE MOTHER AND CUBS WERE ON A ICE BURGE WHEN THE MOM WAS SHOT. THE ARTICLE SAYS IF THEY CAN GET OUT TO THE ICE BURGE THEY WILL KILL THE CUBS

THE BEAR WASNT ATTACKING ANYBODY.

THIS IS BARBARIC AND DISGUSTING. AND I AM NOT A CITY SLICKER JUDY, I LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF BEEF COW COUNTRY.

HUMANS ARE MONSTERS

THE BEAR WAS NOT ON THE ICE BURGE THE BOY WAS

i still dont see where the story says the boy was being attacked, he was being watched by the mother bear with the cubs.

it is still cruel and unacceptable that the cubs will be killed

I think that you are all nuts. Something pretty sick is going on when a 17 year old human has less value than a Polar bear.

Julie, take a look at how different the Arctic ice flows are from"cow country"

There is a picture of the boy on the ice floes taken from the rescue chopper here.
