Australian officials used explosives to blow up a terminally ill humpback whale that became stranded on a beach near Perth two weeks ago, it emerged on Thursday. Here are some other cases of whale beachings and how rescuers tried to save

Unfortunately the whale hunt is very cruel and whale hunters use explosive harpoons. The whale suffer greatly and often drag the boat behind them for hours in excruciating pain. As responsible global citizens we need to be against slaughter of whales and encourage compassion. It was said that this whale was terminally ill, and there are many attempts to rescue whales that are stranded or in peril. It still seems to be a very awful way to euthanize a whale.

Humans should look at what is making whales stressed and sick. Many whales can't even find enough to eat in the oceans, are too thin and have stomach ulcers.

Question is, why are they becoming stranded? Is it our fault with what we are doig with the oceans or a deeper query.

Seems it's still a mystery why these whales of all species beach themselves. But it's just damn crazy to blow up any animal!!! What the hell was these crazy idiots thinking??

mary, i wonder that too. why? what ARE we doing? and they didn't explain why that method was chosen to end the whales life. if there was nothing else that could be done, surely there would be a better way. was the whale really terminally ill or they just couldn't save it from it's predicament?
if sonar is the reason, we better find a way to conteract the effects. found this link: http://www.earthportals.com/beachedwhales.html

Two ounces (60 grams) of prussic acid is toxic enough to kill a whale without painfully blowing the poor beast to shreds. They knew that 150 years ago.

From "Scientific American" September, 2010, p. 12, reprinted from the September, 1860 issue:

"September 1860 - Poison fishing -- A paper has just been published in England on the capture of whales by the means of poison, the agent being hydrocyanic or prussic acid. The subtle poison was contained in glass tubes, in quantity about two ounces, secured to a harpoon. Messrs. W. and G. Young sent a quantity of these harpoons to one of their ships engaged in the Greenland fishery, and on meeting with a fine whale the harpoon was skillfully and deeply buried in his body; the leviathqn immediately 'sounded,' or dived perpendicularly downwards, but in a very short time the whale rose to the surface quite dead. THE MEN WERE SO APPALLED BY THE TERRIFIC EFFECT OF THE POISONED HARPOON THAT THEY DECLONED TO USE ANY MORE OF THEM." (Emaphasis added.)

So even the whalers of old had more compassion than the governments of today, but it was still a hell of a lot better way to go thatn being exploded.

I think there must be a better way to euthanize a poor sick whale. I agree with Mary - what are we doing to cause all this beaching? As with many things, we need to look at the cause and fix that rather than trying to fix the problem when it occurs. We need to stop it from occurring in the first place.

No doubt the whale was terminally ill, but why kill it in such a cruel way.

The thought of using explosives to euthanize ANY animal (no matter how large) greatly disturbs me and I sincerely hope that there is a better alternative out there.

The Australian Government probably didn't even consult anyone with knowledge for a solution. That will come back and bite them where they won't want it to. I guess the Japanese aren't the only ones who don't appreciate those magnificent creatures. Sick or not!!

It's still a mistery why they beach themselves.
Was there no other way to euthanize the whale? Explosives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!how cruel!!!!!!!!!!!

Whales are difficult to euthanize or kill because they are so large. On the other hand, humans are killing them slowly through overfishing and polluting (icluding sonar pollution) the oceans. So they starve or get sick and beach themselves.

Why are so many contributors suggesting euthanasia by explosives is cruel? The shock wave will destroy the brain faster than the nervous system can propagate a message of pain... death will be instantaneous. Far more humane than poison, attempting to shoot it or leaving the animal to suffer and die naturally.
Just because it's messy doesn't mean it's cruel.

I have little doubt that Navy sonar exercises are causing whales to beach themselves. Extremely sad.
