When we think of saving wildlife, we picture protecting animals in far-off expanses of vast untouched wild places. We support legislation, we vote, we send money and wait for news of how the work of organizations that are the lifeblood of preservation

a great article where it is good to reflect because it contains great truths.
....National Wildlife Federation, as well as the Humane Society of the United States,
Both offer a program where Participants can certify Their outdoor space as a
wildlife habitat...
This is really a very nice action to highlight and take
noted - thx u Cher

I read this as I sit outside in my yard watching the very critters written about in this article. Baby mocking birds begging food from ma & pa, a black snake hiding in the bushes, etc. Its all about native plants for native wildlife. Thanks for the post.

I have in my backyard a bird bath which I clean and fill it with fresh water everyday, I also put food out for the many different animals that come to eat and they come drink and take bathes, I love to sit and watch them, it gives me peace.

I'm not in favour of a lawn at all. We've got a wild meadow in the back; there are bats, jays, tits, squirrels, wood- pidgeons, wood- peckers...what a joy ! At front we have flowers, trees and grasses. We keep it a bit "uniform", because the neighbors don't accept "wild" (they all have a lawn, we're the only ones who haven't). We don't like "sloane rangers", who keep their lawn tidy to the mm.

Water usage is also a consideration. Any plan for a yard that doesn't require anything more than naturally occurring rain is best. If, however, one is to actually going to use pumped water either from the city or from a well, then common sod is one of the worst wastes of water going. It is far better to grow herbs that require little watering or to use up lawn space with a vegetable garden. If one must use water then use it for something useful like food.
