Regardless of your feelings on gun control, most everyone can agree that guns should never be placed into the hands of children. In recent years we've seen a tremendous spike in deaths related to shootings by kids, whether accidental or purposeful.

We've had some ghastly massacres in the UK, too - Dunblane and Hungerford to name but 2. We have very tight gun control, and even with that, several people are killed each year with weapons that should not be out there.

Surely to goodness, if you really, really have to have a weapon, the ordinary person should only be allowed a weapon that shoots only once at a time, and will therefore hurt or kill only one person.

And it goes without saying that these weapons should be kept locked in a secure cupboard, and well away from anyone under the age of 18.

Guns have done more damage in this world than atomic weapons, I suspect, if it's all added together. Guns should be abolished! But who listens to me?

My big problem with gun control issues is that I consider both sides to be wrong. I disagree with those who run the NRA, particularly since 63% of NRA members do not agree with their positions, and their 'More guns of every kind for every one regardless of criminal background or mental state'. And I disagree with the equally extreme 'Ban all guns' advocates. American citizens have the right to own guns for hunting and personal defense but they do not have the right to own military grade or military purpose weapons of any kind. Also All American Citizens have the right to be safe from the criminal use of guns and the use of guns by the mentally unstable or those with criminal histories. I grew up with guns, owned guns from the age of 16 and could disassemble, clean, reassemble and load and reload ammunition, by which I mean putting the gun powder and bullet, or shot for a shotgun, into the casing, and new exactly what was a safe and not safe to do with a gun beginning in grade school. The community I grew up in was a gun community, every one man, woman and child had a gun and was gun responsible and no one ever shot any one else intentionally or by accident. More people were killed or injured by cars than guns.
Gun ownership has to go back to "Being a responsibility first and a right second'. It can no longer be acceptable for carrying a gun for intimidation, Tea Bagged protesters carrying AK 47 in marches/protesters. It can no longer be acceptable for expecting greater responsibility from gun owners that those who can drive cars.
At some point sanity from both sides must be demanded.

Why should children be deprived of the healthy sport of target shooting?

And in some areas you need to carry a gun for protection against wildlife - eg. in Svalbard a high powered rifle is mandatory equipment for day care personnel.
