Petition signed - I am going to repeat what I said on another thread about this, because I believe it to be true.
For the many women who do not report rape and only rarely discuss it with a very trusted friend, this is why. I saw this interview clip last night which was followed by one of the worst retractions of late. The problem is not that he spoke to quickly to answer the reporter, the problem is that he spoke at all.
What a surprise, he hasn't the first clue about female anatomy, and what has become a BIG selling point lately, actual rape is rare. No, rape is common, it may not be reported, but I would guess that I am not the only woman that others have shared their stories with.
In a continued effort to force their personal agenda on all of us, near illiterates like this dimwit, try to use rape as tool for their anti-abortion agenda.
What makes me most angry is that women buy into this stupid, political rhetoric. You have rights, stop listening to these MEN, and stand up for yourself. You did not ASK to be raped, you and only you can decide whether or not you want to carry a child of rape to full term or have an abortion. Neither god, nor Jesus nor any bible speaks to the issue of abortion - stop listening to these bonehead, ignoramuses, and make your own decisions about your own body. Rape is real, there is no grey line.

For one, rape is rape. There is NO "legitimate" and "illegitimate" rape. Secondly, this is exactly why we rank so low in education. The right wing is rewriting science and history. Why is the GOP declaring war on women? Next to go is our vote and then their version of sharia law. Break out the burkas. Women are losing all constitutional rights. We are humans with (supposedly) inalienable rights. Hey GOP do you remember that thing called the Constitution - or just the parts that YOU want to remember?

This moron is typical of the republican party. They only care about fetuses. They don't give a damn about the child after it is born. If you think things are bad now, vote for these holier than thou jerk-offs and see just how bad it will be.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that we have somebody that stupid in the government in the Republican Party. Just vote for the Republicans in November and it will be like the 1950's all over again for women. Signed and noted

What an idiot! He should not be on the public payroll. All people in US Congress and state legislatures should have to pass a test, e.g. an 8th grade graduation test and/or tests required for teacher licensure. Me thinks half of the US Congress is likely to say something as stupid as Todd Akin's remark.
It is time for the press to step up to the plate and ask all candidates more tough questions, so we can see what they are really thinking. Let's not let this comment by Akin fade away; it all fits with the ReTHUGnican War on Women.

Rep. Akin may not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but I don't believe for one moment, that he believes what he said. He is following the rhetoric of the Tea Party Republican GOP, led by the Koch Brothers.
This is about 'power & control' over women, which they believe they are losing. Women's rights scare them to death. They don't feel strong and manly, if they can't CONTROL.
LITCHFIELD, CT—Though she was initially upset following the brutal sexual assault last month that left her pregnant, victim Martha Byars told reporters she was relieved Sunday to learn from Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) that her ability to conceive her unwanted child proves she was not, in fact, legitimately raped.
“Being violently coerced into having sex was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, so I take comfort in knowing it wasn’t actually rape,” Byars said of the vicious encounter in which she was accosted in an alleyway by a stranger, pinned to the ground, and penetrated against her will for 25 minutes. “It was absolutely horrific—I felt violated in the worst way imaginable—but thanks to Congressman Akin, I now realize it must, at some level, have been consensual after all.”
“Thank God for that,” Byars added. “I’m so relieved to know that my child’s father, the man who muffled my screams as he forcefully penetrated me over and over and left me hemorrhaging to death on the street, is not a rapist.”
NEWS IN BRIEF
Republicans Condemn Akin's Comments As Blemish On Party's Otherwise Spotless Women's Rights Record
Explaining that the Republican senatorial candidate’s statements had “really opened her eyes” by helping her understand the workings of her own reproductive system, Byars said she only wishes she could have known at the time of her near-fatal assault that the female body has ways to shut down conception during cases of tried-and-true rape.
“Now that I know the truth, I realize none of the telltale signs of legitimate rape were there at all,” mused Byers, noting that her body did not in any way shut down but in fact continued to register excruciating pain throughout the entire cruel ordeal. “I must have at least subconsciously wanted it—otherwise, the sperm wouldn’t have been able to enter my body.”
“Not only is this knowledge a blessing for me,” she continued, “but it will no doubt bring great hope to the tens of thousands of women who are forcibly and savagely impregnated in the United States every year.”

Signed & Noted. Thank you, Cher. I've signed many of these from various groups in the past couple days. If Akin isn't booted from office soon, I can't believe he will still be there after the election. Is it more unbelievable that a sitting member of Congress actually said this...or that he was voted into office in the first place?

Only a man could express such a notion.................'never argue with an idiot - they just drag you down to their level.....and this is one big idiot. Thanks Cher, signed and noted.

There is a reason as to repukes want to cut education funding and sponsor only abstinence only sex 'education' courses in schools: It's to keep you RWNJ's in line and uneducated. Proof is right here with this moron.
Robert it's not just limited intellect, it's an intentional push to force any woman who is raped to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term. Further, Ryan has made public statements that all abortions should be illegal. Not that he is saying that women who have abortions should go to jail or that doctors who perform abortions should be jailed...but if it's illegal - it is illegal. This is SMALLER government? In what fantasy is the government being in a woman body about smaller government, it can not get much bigger or more intrusive than that.

Such great comments here, thanks Cher, Kit, and Jim, laughed quite a bit on those onion pieces. Of course, Akin is a complete idiot and should not getting taxpayer money for making such ridiculous and stupid comments. He might actually win the Senate election; it's very close at this time, even after this ridiculous comment. I hope the Show-me state shows Akin the door.

Signed and thank you. The Dark Ages are upon us. We can debate his intellect
and his ability to understand basic biology all day. The tragedy is, he thought
this! In this day and age, he made this mistake, we wonder about whats next
for them to mess up. We need to purge congress, basic tests are not to awful
or discriminating when members are this far behind in ability and education.

Quote from the article: “From what I understand from doctors…if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” said Akin.
What doctors? If Akin didn't just invent them, they should be named and shamed.
A woman being raped is terrified, she doesn't know if she won't be killed afterwards, she's praying with all her might not only for the attack and disgusting enforced sexual act to be over but also to get away with her life.
But Akin thinks that while her brain is practically numb with fear the rest of her body is capable of shutting down and rejecting the invading sperm. Is there a brain in his head or a chickpea?
Rape is rape and how can it ever be non-violent, even if the act is forced upon a woman by her partner or a friend? If she's non-consenting then it obviously implies violence because if not then she'd just say no and that would be enough. If the man doesn't stop but goes through with the sexual act against the woman's will, then what else would anyone call it but rape?

Personally, I am SO PLEASED that Akin said what he did. If we believe that REPUBLICANS ARE FLAWED -- flawed by their cluelessness, their greed, their hypocrisy, whatever... WE NEED ALL THE HARD PROOF WE CAN GET.
So, THANK YOU, Mr. Akin. You've done us a great service. And please, don't listen to 'em..... stay in the race! The Dems need you to stay in the race cause we need that seat.
