Sandye the hen passed very suddenly on Halloween morning after spending her last three years in generally good health and what we suspect were her "golden years."

Sandye's passing made me think about my own mortality and the mortality of others too. My wise friend Pamela posed a great question the other day: If Sandye did indeed die of natural causes and with little suffering, as I sincerely hope, and in the presence of the guardian that loved and cared for her, isn't that what we hope for ourselves and all of our loved ones? And should we not extend that wish to every animal, even those we will never see or know? If so, then we are obligated to choose a humane path in life that does not impose violence on others because we can. Thanks for sharing Sandye's story Cher, loved what the last part said-had to post it!

Oh my goodness, I can barely see what I am typing for the tears. I have had that same exact experience with several of my beloved birds. And I can never forget the look they would all give me just before their last breaths. My wish for Sandye is that she may now rest eternally in the sunshine she loved so much and that her guardian finds comfort in the knowing that he made her last few years a time filled with love and companionship. R.I.P. little one. You will never be forgotten.

Little Sandye will see her human family one day in Heaven. Anyone who is fortunate to be a mom or dad to an animal knows how difficult this is. Sandye will be watching her loved ones from above.

What a beautiful story. Every life is important. Humans have no right to take a life - rather it's anothe human or animal. The Bible says 'Thou shall not kill!!' It doesn't say that we should kill another human - it says we shall not kill - and that means animals also.
