Rather, the beating heart of any such institution, anywhere in the world, must be true conservation

Agrees completely. Sanctuaries and protected reserves (where animals are) do more for conservation, to be left living in the wild. Most zoo animals will never see the wild again. And it encourages (often) illegal capture of animals from the wild. That is not conservation- it is poaching. And zoos make a profit from it.

agree, zoos and parks keep them in cages when they aren't meant to be caged, no animal is

I always thought this, even when I was little. I could see that the animals were unhappy. Thanks Cher.

As a child I studied all I could find about wild animals. I often found myself more knowledgeable about wild animals than my teachers in school. It was my first trip to a zoo that ignited that fascination with the wild. It was seeing the elephants up close that let me understand the sheer size of them, seeing the giraffes that had me mesmerized by their height. Since then I have visited various zoos and wildlife parks in the US and Europe as a military brat.

I was never able to see Africa or Asia and if not for the zoos would never have seen the true variety of nature, nor had the appreciation of it that I do. So, I will not condemn the zoos for existing as I believe that, like me, most of those who would protect the wild got that calling while at a zoo or circus. Photos and drawings alone donít do it, unless you are taking those photos or drawing from live models.

I would instead seek to have the zoos improved for the benefit of the animals so as to eliminate abuse. I would see them improved and enlarged to where habitats are recreated on a realistic scale and not just sampled. Make exhibits large enough that the animals donít realize they are penned and cannot see the humans that would watch them. Unrealistic, I know. However, at current rates of destruction of natural habitats, zoos may soon be home to the only ďwildĒ animals on the planet. Currently, no animal is safe in the wild as our kind either kills them directly or destroys what they need to survive.

I believe that we are tilting at windmills, and I will continue. I believe this because for all that we try to help do what we can, the current exponential growth of the human race will use up the wild; all of it. What is not protected by being in zoos may not exist at all. So while we are trying to save the planet from our own kind remember that in very few years our 7 Billion will be 20 Billion and anything that can be eaten or used for power for machinery probably will have been. The forests will be gone. The natural water sources will be gone. Any competition for sustenance will be exterminated. Only plankton will be creating oxygen, if we havenít killed that too. Perhaps only chemical plants will make oxygen and water. If it hasn't already happened by then, the prices for air and water, let alone food, will likely result in a mass reduction in population. I donít want to know what the population will be eating.

It seems even as children we all were destined to fight together for what disgusted us from the start.
Truly a sign that evil is not subjective.
Thanks Cher♥

I visited the zoo in Rome years ago, is a large zoo and the animals are kept with dignity, some are born in captivity.
But each of them has the look of the eyes off, but do not see them play at most they fight for the food, many attitudes are symptomatic of stress.
I do not will ever bring my niece to see animals in a zoo

Thank you for posting ! I am sure my position has been very clear. Zoos and Parks - o how sentimental - how selfish - how cruel. My first and last trip to the zoo as a child - I cried. And my mother took me out, and told me it was WRONG to do this to animals, and that she was sorry she brought me. She continued to teach me well. Teach our children well ! So if people think children can't see and feel deeply what it is for animals to be enslaved and locked away - they can! I am sure I wasn't the first child, nor the last.

I completely disagree with this article. Good zoos & good wildlife parks rescue animals that will never be able to return to the wildness & prevents endangered species from losing more population. There are places in this world where wildlife is simply not safe because of poaching & deforestation & fossil fuel mining.

For endangered species, this may become the last resort before they are totally eliminated. If it wasn't for China breeding pandas in captivity, who knows how many would be alive today.

I am sure that any healthy animal would like to be in natural habitat and running free same as humans. I wouldn't like to be on display and penned up, no matter how nice the pen or how big. Free to just be. Thank you.

The worst is that there are so many bad zoos, which can't provide for their animals. There should also be a law on how small areas the animals should be kept in. Thanks Cher for posting this and Michela for forwarding

Animals are not meant to be locked up in zoos, but rather a habitat or sanctuary where they can roam freely. As a child, I always felt so sorry for the animals when we went to the zoo. TY Cher
