Beautiful Drakes Estero estuary is on the brink of becoming the west coast's only protected marine wilderness area this year -- but now that plan is under attack by commercial oyster interests. Urge Secretary Salazar to honor the deal

Drakes Estero is one of California's and our nation's most special places, and it must be protected for the benefit of all future generations.

Spread the word to help ensure wilderness status for Drakes Estero by sharing this action on Facebook and Twitter.

Signed although the village we come from in France was changed from salt farming to oyster farms & it's fine. But it's on a river several miles from the Atlantic rather than right on the Atlantic coast.

I stayed with my former Santa Fe roommate in Point Reyes for a month, while deciding where I wanted to move to....She had moved there, which I did not know until I met musicians and artists in San Rafael who invited me to a sweat lodge on Winter Solstice. I thought of my Santa Fe roommate from 1981, as she had asked my Lakota friend to help her do a sweat, but, this was now 1990. When I drove up with my San Rafael friends up the mountain, I arrived at the home, and my former Santa Fe roommate greeted us at teh door. he entire year I was travelling was like this. I would hear a message to go into a certain coffee shop in Puerta Vallarta, talk with diners in Costa Rica, approach someone in a movie theatre in Seattle, etc, and all of these things would lead me to people I had met elsewhere, or had a connection via a film director with. At the end of the year, I would up back in LA....

REAT NEWS!! Our vices were heard

In a watershed decision for national parks and wilderness areas, Interior Department Secretary Ken Salazar announced today that he will uphold the 1976 Point Reyes Wilderness Act and protect the National Seashore’s ecological heart, Drakes Estero.

Salazar declined to issue a new permit for a controversial commercial oyster operation in the biologically rich estuary, thereby affording it the nation’s highest resource protection status and creating the West Coast’s first marine wilderness area.
