With no limits on reef fish collection for the aquarium trade in Hawaii, overharvesting of reef fish is stripping our reefs of their health and beauty. Each year hundreds of thousands of Hawaii's reef animals are collected for the aquarium trade.

I wish people could think passed their next few minutes, days, weeks. If we take wild animals it damages the entire system they are a part of. That system is our system too. We need to think long term and act immediately. Thank you Cher for this opportunity.

Too bad it isn't mentioned that there are limits and restrictions on the gathering and resale of marine species. Reef fishes, unless very endangered, probably live longer in aquariums than in nature. Keeping saltwater (marine) fish is a very expensive "hobby" and those that take it on usually do their homework and spend thousands of dollars on equipment.

Yes, of course fish die in tanks, but the problem usually arises from improper acclimation or poor maintenance. If one spends $100 for a tiny fish, and has $10,000 invested in equipment, they are likely to take proper measures. Death of fishes still happens. However, in nature, it happens far more often and the lifespan of fish is often far less than in a home aquarium, especially if that aquarium is properly maintained.

The article also fails to address the fact that most fish obtained in the "squarium trade" are captive-bred. Check out the sites where marine fish can be purchased. They clearly state exactly that. Watch "Tanked" or "Fish Tank Kings". Both companies have sources which breed, raise and then sell marine species and that is where they obtain their "specimens".
