A white tiger is a striking creature. Tigers are always impressive animals, but when you take away the orange, the result is a big cat that looks like a phantom out of a dream.

White tigers are rare genetic mutations, not a different species. According to the San Diego Zoo, every American white tiger is descended from a single father. New cubs must be inbred further. For every healthy, valuable cub, it is thought that many are born with ailments like shortened tendons, club foot, kidney problems, malformed backbones, contorted necks, and twisted faces.

"As William Conway, former director of the New York Zoological Association put it many years ago, "White tigers are freaks. It's not the role of a zoo to show two headed calves and white tigers."

In the mid 80's I recall signing so many petitions calling for a stop to this sad breeding for profit..And also standing behind the boycott against Siegfried and Roy..

Than you for sharing this sweetie..Hope it will help to educate those who were not aware of this..

Thanks, Cher. Breeding white tigers does NOTHING to save the REAL species!

Too much inbreeding and it isn't just the white ones either. Most tigers in captivity come from a limited gene stock.

Thank you for this very informative article. Although they too are beautiful, I don't think we should mess with nature.

Not the article title I expected to see in a posting from you, Cher, but well reasoned and well explained. And responsible and right.

That's why we get into trouble by messing with nature and causing imbalances!

From what I understand white tigers are inbred and suffer many maladies because of it; much like the royal lizards who think they're all descended from the gods. I propose both species should be euthanized and put out of their misery. I've always been a colonialist, lol - meowtch.

Interesting point of view. I disagree with the zoo's breeding for white tigers. That is done for profit and not for saving the species. There is a zoo in my city that does this. God will punish them for this.

Good and informative article. Zoos are breeding white tigers just for making money.

Zoos? Hell, no. No thanks. In order to get young of virtually any wild species, the mothers have to be killed. This is true of chimps, apes, elephants, tigers lions, killer whales, and dolphins, etc., etc.

When man starts to realize that he is NOT the apex of creation, perhaps the white tigers will have a chance to live in peace. They're inbred? Whose fault is that? The tiger's or man's? Animals should be left in the wild and we have to recognize that some spots on earth aren't going to be great properties for shopping malls and cheesy housing developments. They're habitat and need to be left alone. We need to stop thinking of profit and start setting up more protected lands for these animals to live on in peace.

Let the tigers be. That there are only 4000 left is OUR fault. What is a white tiger? It's an opportunity for some sociopath to make a buck selling it to a #$@/!! zoo!

I have to ask the author of this article. would you want to live behind glass, behind bars, inside a moat? Why should any wild creature be expected to do so?

I must admit that I also thought that the white tigers were Sibirian tigers. Now I learned that white tigers are rare genetic mutations coming from the same father, well that says it all. Again, we see it is all about the $. Money for breeding programs should be alotted to the real species and subspecies and not be used for freak breeding. A lot of money for Zoos also comes from public donations and that money should be spent wisely. Only responsible breeding without interbreeding of species should take place with the thought of reintroducing them into the wild, in this case the Mighty Tiger; Bengal. Sibirian, Sumatran and I am sure there are some more subspecies that I don't know of. Tigers, and other big cats do not belong into a Circus or a Zoo. Serious breeding should be done in the vicinity of their own original habitat, possibly not meeting too many humans and definitely not poachers. They will survive much better just by instinct in familiar climate and environment.
