No trip to the beach is complete without a souvenir, but is it right to take home a living creature? WINGS, a beachwear store with 30 locations across the United States, sells hermit crabs among its many other beach-related merchandise.

the hermit crabs sold in shops at the beach are a southern terrestrial species. please don't buy a hermit crab and throw it in the ocean thinking you're doing it a favor. you're only killing it.

They're exotic and wild creatures, not to be kept in a small tank!

Noted and signed. Hermit crabs belong in the wild not in a tiny tank. That said, I do agree with Bill in that you shouldn't buy a hermit crab and release it especially since we usually don't know what variety they are. I know I'd hate to think I was doing something to help only to wind up being the cause of death. If there's a sanctuary or something similar somewhere that would take store-bought crabs then that would be good. However, we need to put a stop to the practice of selling hermit crabs at all. {Hope this all makes sense as sometimes my words don't come out right.} Thanks so much, Cher.

S & N! Sheesh...Some idiot will take it home as a pet and put the poor thing in tap water , killing it because they are to stupid to know that these are salt water creatures . OR take it home and feel like they are beating Red lobsters price on a crab dinner, when anyone with half a brain knows there isn't a stitch of meat enough to make a meal...Leave these creatures alone!
