Oh mein Gott in Himmel. Talk about going off half cocked. There is NO plan to eradicate flying foxes in Queensland. Controlling is hardly a euphemism for wholesale slaughter. As for these "Darling" creatures. They are the prime , and only, reason for the infection called "Hendra" virus. This kills Horses and humans and has done so in Queensland and Northern N S W. The name derives from the Brisbane suburb of Hendra with its proliferation of racing stables which led to the the death of a horse trainer from FF droppings on horse feed.
Now the Flying Fox is a fruitarian Bat and creates devastating havoc in orchards. When the bat relied only on natural fruits in rain forests its habitat was restricted as were the populations. Today with the extensive areas of fruit orchards available they are growing in number and, unfortunately, they also spread their contaminating faeces. into human habitation resulting in contaminated water.(Most Australian Country homes collect their water in tanks from rainfall on their roofs).

Controlling the growing number of FF (because of the ready availability of orchard fruits) is not only an economic necessity but a health sustainability question also ,the answer is not easy. The bleeding heart appeals is reminiscent of the feral "Cat" lovers attitudes regardless of the millions of feral cats decimating
native specie. Where the cat protectors do not extend their concerns to the hunted species survival, the Flying Fox preservers equally seem oblivious to the thousands of Orchardists economic survival, or the very real health issues of those in the Equine Industry or country dwellers relying on clean rain water in the tanks.

Get your priorities in order. If you have lived anywhere near a flying fox colony, and had to move away because of the stench of their body wastes during the season. Have to put down one or more of your favourite horses, or had to consider a costly replacement to your water supply, because of thr contamination you might just be a tad more considerate of the welfare of those affected BY the Flying Fox

It appears that most did not read my earlier entry, and also not being Australian they, whilst being willing to make negative remarks, have no understanding of the immensity of the problem, they also have no hesitation about making emotional responses that are neither reasoned, nor supported by facts.
