In 1970, there were 30,000 New Zealand dolphins. Now there are only 7,000. And, for the small population around New Zealand's North Island (known as the Maui's dolphin), it's even more critical - there are fewer than 100 left alive!

Signed,thanks. These are wonderfull animals that deserve our protection. So the bulk of these dolphins are being trapped in fishing nets and dying as a result,so why not design new nets...maybe new nets will not be needed as pretty soon there will be no fish left to fill those nets...aint life grand...........

Natasha, what they have done is build new boats which drag nets across the ocean floor taking and killing everything in its path. It is incredibly destructive as the ocean floor is left barren. The unwanted part of the catch is thrown back but it is dead. Coral reefs are destroyed and there is nothing left for the future.

In poorer countries they already blow up coral reefs to catch all of the fist there. Man will not be satisfied until the oceans are too poisoned to contain life and too barren to sustain life, either there or on land where many poorer countries rely on the sea to feed them.
