like any other exotic, birds are far better adopted directly from breeders and others experienced in their specialized care. birds are not like cats and dogs, who are all the same species - each type of bird is a totally different creature with specific needs which mainstream pet dealers often do not understand. even in "specialty" pet stores i have seen birds being housed inappropriately and fed diets unsuitable for their needs...and if the store does not understand their requirements, they cannot instruct potential owners.

birds are fortunate - they are relatively small, attractive, intelligent, and with proper care adapt well to human households. in many cases species now extinct in the wild still thrive in captivity and have a chance to be reestablished should their environments be restored.

the MAIN thing to oppose is the fashion for hybrid macaws - all macaw species are endangered in the wild and as they mate for life, each hybrid pair deadends a critical genetic resource. since these "new" birds are given "species" names (Camelot, Shamrock, MiliGold, etc), most buyers don't even realise that they are not "natural" macaws. an even more pervasive danger is later generations who resemble a pure-species ancestor being bred to another bird of one of the original species, tying up still more precious genes.

"With a wing, and a prayer, for their lives in our keeping -
Generations are sleeping in the birds in our care.
With a wing, and a prayer...that they'll always be there."
