Sent Tom Tancredi-

Dear Sir,

I recently read an online editorial regarding Vassar "shoot to kill" policy of wild deer entering the colleges' property. With the local deer population being reduced from sixty- five to only 9, I am highly critical of this institutes' ecological management programme. It seems somewhat hypocritical of Vassar College to be baiting & slaughtering deer within their 'ecological reserve'.

I urge the local body council to institute a town resolution effective immediately, that urges Vassar to consider other options besides killing when Vassar arbitrarily decides again that there are too many deer on their property.

Kind Regard,
Rene Davis

Many thanks for this. It's interesting that a very rich enclave here in Ithaca, NY, populated by Cornell University and Ithaca College professors, are trying to do the same thing. Last I heard their kill program was suspended in favor of birth control and less stringent regulations against fencing.

It is ludicrous to be killing deer. What they are teaching the students is that it is okay to kill. Deer are gentle, beautiful beautiful animals. I feed about 40-60 deer a night. Have generations of them that grew up in my back yard. They are family oriented, smart and gentle. I do not try to touch them or make them trust humans. They trust me, but that is it. They know my voice. Their hearing is so sharp that I can talk to them from inside the house with all doors and windows closed, and they can hear me. Oh, yes, I live in the city limits. lol

Thanx Cher. It is more fun to kill a living being than to plant a bush that is why they are killing not planting. Surely this is against the law?

“It’s ludicrous that Vassar, with their vast financial resources, refuses to adopt common sense, long-term strategies such as modifying landscapes to deter deer from sensitive areas of the preserve and planting vegetation that deer don’t consider food,” says Edita Birnkrant, NY Director of Friends of Animals. “Plants can easily be replanted—blasting away at deer on preserve land is an irrational, mean response.”
Just about says it all!
