The businessman has started a campaign to rid his country of cats, but his science is shoddy to say the least.

I don't think he will get through with it, but he does have a point. There are no native terrestrial mammals in New Zealand. It was a paradise for birds. But when people started bringing cats, rats, possums and other animals, they took over the habitat. Most of New Zealand's endemic bird species are threatened now. Some because of people, most of them because of these foreign animals.
Sadly, there's not much people can do about it now that they already messed it up. They can't rid the country of all the cats, rats and possums (although, they are trying to, and were successful in some small islands next to NZ, where they built sanctuaries for native bird species, like the kakapo, the world's only flightless parrot).
So, yes it probably would be better for the native animals if the mammals would disappear from the island, but it would have to be ALL of them. And since that will never happen, sadly we can probably just make the best out of it...
(and just so nobody gets me wrong, I do NOT want all the cats, rats and possums killed! I love them! So I don't think there will be a solution to this problem)

My vet told me that feral cats have about a 2 year life span, that is an average. There are numerous reasons for that, none that can not be imagined. Gareth Morgan is reacting in just the way of the old adage of "tossing the baby out with the bath water". Let's not bother to find a real solution, let' s not co-ordinate efforts to ensure all strays are safely and well cared for - no, just make stupid statements that can only lead to an open policy of killing all feral cats. This is so beyond stupid that it can only be characterized as mean spirited and cruel.

I love cats, but they dont belong there, they are fast killing the natural uniqe animals, I dont wanne kill the cats, I love all living creatures, every creature has its place, and I would like to guess that most people would not complain if they got rid of killer bees, but they are just as much missplaced as cats in new zealand and australia..

Gareth Morgan is an ignorant arsehole.
Spay and neuter cats and dogs.
If anyone is to be exterminated then it should be corrupt Gareth Morgan.

Gareth Morgan seems a little *too* ridiculous. Is anyone else wondering if this a "Modest Proposal" sort of thing?

Why doesn't this genius put his money toward funding low cost or free spaying and neutering?

Anyone who allows a domestic cate to roam outdoors is part of the problem!

Cats DO kill millions of song birds, rodents, small reptiles, etc, every year!

Domestic cats can live longer, healthier lives when kept indoors and their negative impact on the environment is removed.

Remember that domestic cats are NOT a "natural" animal...they were created by humans, as cetainly as dogs have been bred to suit our purposes.

There IS a satisfying compromise here....and keeping cats indoors takes care of the problem.

OK. Which story is the truth. Two days ago there was another article on this and Morgan wasn't asking people to get rid of their cats like this story said, but asked people to keep their cats indoors. That's one thing about the stories on CARE2, you don't know who is telling the truth and who is telling half truths.

Having shot over 120 cats in my valley and seen the proliferation of native lizards and birds since over the past thirty years I can advocate for Doctor .22.. Before you start caterwauling, In Australia I am required by law to kill all feral introduced specie which includes Cats, Foxes, Rabbits, Pigs etc., It is estimated that there are more than 20 million feral Cats in Australia. Then remember that they will kill and eat at least one native animal a day each. Yep you don't have to be a mathematician, Seven hundred and thirty million living animal meals a year minimum. That is additional to the feeding of the domestic animals. In N Z on one island alone a single cat exterminated a whole unique avian specie on a remote island. That it was a new and unique specie was discovered AFTER the last bird was killed. The only time my lead injection is now required is when Cat Lovers abandon their feline friends when they go on holidays or leave the district. Rabbits still keep intruding, guess they always will.

Oh I shut myself off too soon. This gentleman, of whom I hasten to add I haven't the slightest knowledge, is being accused by so many unqualified people of being clinically insane, or words to that effect, whilst showing the symptoms of extreme tunnel vision and lack of knowledge. For all those who advocate spay, neuter AND RETURN to the wild. How will this prevent a single death of a native animal? Spay and neuter your domestic animals by all means. I did the equivalent to my Gelding, it won't change a thing in the "Bush" As much as I don't want to comment on your Vets's findings in America regarding life expectancy of feral cats I can assure you that there wouldn't be over 20 million roaming our bush if they had such short life spans, and I would even question from whence that figure for life expectancy was studied and extrapolated. Not many vets that I know do anything except "Doctor" sick animals, let alone research the life, times, and sexual activities of the feral ones.

Guys, the situation in Australia and NZ is a lot different than in the US, remeber that! You can't compare it!
Spaying and neutering won't help there, because the animals still run around. Tom is right there (although I certainly don't agree with killing, but I can understand why people do it...)
Maybe keeping cats inside would be the best solution, but still there are lots of other wild animals like rats and possums who don't belong to NZ and keep killing native birds. (possums are not a problem in Australia though, they are native there, and are threatened! while being a pest in NZ)

what an idiot! What it's needed, not only in NZ but everywhere are responsible pet guardians. If this man wants New Zealand to be pristine then people should leave the country, all of them starting with him. he should be the example, jump into the Cook Strait and disappear forever

I do not mind cats, but I would never have one. I prefer canines, they show love and effection, man's best friend and can be trained. But I dislike cat owners, they are so irresponsible and arrogant. One neighbor has 5 neglected cats and there are many others in the street. Supposed to be indoors after dark, cat owners do not give a shit. Their cats piss and shit everywhere, what a stench. Cat owner do not care about that, as long as they do it somewhere else, so they don't have to put up with it.
How many dead birds have I collected over recent years, not eaten but stripped of feathers, a toy. I still have mice and rats.
Gareth Morgan might just have point.

People are natural born killers also! Pesticides is only one of the many proofs of that. Being a zillionaire doesn't make this man a god to decide who lives and who dies! Besides, no matter which animal we like best, all of them have the right to live, just like we do(maybe!) and if they are in the "wrong place", "someone" took them there! Guess who...
