"Half a century ago on September 27, 1962, a book revolutionized the way environmental issues were included in the scope of the world’s governments. Author Rachel Carson penned Silent Spring during a time when Environmental Ministries were as of yet a non-reality and many ecologically-damaging enterprises bore ahead without regulation in a booming, quickening economy. It was Carson who educated the world on many of the realities of hazardous new industrial pesticides being used on food crops, bringing the issue to the attention of none other than John F. Kennedy, who subsequently had his Science Advisory Committee move to phase out the “persistent toxic pesticides.”

It was Rachel Carson, her book, Silent Spring, who really got me started on the environmental trek I've been on for so many years. There are so many wonderful, great women in history, many living right now. What I'd like this day to become is EVERY day. That women be recognized for their tremendous contributions not only historically, but right now. That women STOP being abused and mistreated in every country of this planet, NOW and forever. A day is nice, forever is necessary. I"m sure some troll will be along to ask when is "mens" day, and the answer to that IS every day and always has been. THAT needs changing too. We are a world only when all of us are valued every day. I'd say this is a beginning, but it isn't, it is just a day, and on it there will be atrocities committed against women everywhere. When THAT stops, equality will have been achieved and we will be a civilization. We've a long way to go to get to that day.

Led to their own devices, women could change this miserable world within 2 years.
