WV ONLY!!! Many insurance companies in West Virginia arbitrarily terminate a homeowner's insurance policy just because the homeowner has a certain breed of dog. An insurance company can also decline to issue a policy just because of your dog's breed

I know you won't be happy with this comment, but I agree with the insurance companies on this one. The fact is that certain breeds, statistically, cause the most reported injuries. Responsible owners and good dogs aren't at fault for this, but you can't expect insurance companies to personally evaluate every case.
Besides, I have 2 German Shepherds and a Malamute ~ *dangerous* breeds ~ and I got homeowners insurance with no problem at all.
The problem is simply that this is a sue-happy world! Just look at the lawyer's TV ads.

Sorry Barbara I do disagree with respect.

I also, have 2 GSD's and have had huskies and not dangerous at all. Matter of fact my male gsd whom is 100 pounds is the most mellow dog on the planet. The sad part is that when I walk him everyone scatters without knowing him.

Again I get a tad sad when breeds are targeted and owners are not held accountable. Little dogs, mixed breeds can also be dangerous.

Wanted to make additional point.

My Aunt whom is one of the worst dog owners on the planet had 2 previous mixed breeds that were very aggressive. She formed them to be that way by not training or socializing them. I got bit by one of them just entering her house and I met this dog many many times prior.

Walking one of my huskies yrs ago was snapped at by a setter that was not being watched by the owners. My husky not being aggressive never bit the dog but, tried like hell to get away from it.

If an insurance company is going to ban one breed then all dogs should be on the list. Hell my parrot bites he should be on the list as well.

I agree Ellen!!! Sorry Barbara!

Breed discrimination is so wrong.

My mother-in-laws dog is a jack russel/shitzu mix and it is the nastiest animal I have ever met. ALWAYS biting someone! VERY AGGRESSIVE!! Poor thing was abused as a baby and my mother-in-law rescued her. She can be a nice dog when she wants to but a lot of the time... NOT!

Seriously, I agree with you. I work with dozens of dogs every day and guess who the biters are? Not the Pits, Rotties, Huskies..........
Nonetheless, insurance companies assess the risk factors by statistics not anecdotal evidence.

Then couldn't a simple answer be to require all owners of large or possibly aggressive breeds to take education/training classes before they can adopt or own a dog that fits this description? I may be wrong but when we attach a description like "aggressive" to a breed or allow for insurance companies to make a selection of what breed they will cover in the policy, soon we see more of that group of dogs being killed.
I believe that if a proposed owner can not be bothered with a little education about their dogs, maybe they should not be considered good potential owners.

That's funny Ellen, but I learned that parrots that are not raised by hand from early on, they often bite. My friend had one for years and he would bite anyone given a chance.

Kit's right....a training class for owners is a good idea.

We have the same issues in California....pit bulls, chows and Rottweilers are disallowed on my homeowners' insurance.

I lost count on how many small dogs have bit me.
Never been bit by a big dog. I agree that obedience classes are a very good idea for any dog owner.
No insurance company should be able to just cancel the insurance because someone has a big dog. Do homeowners have to worry about this now?

I also disagree seems to me that the real issue here is the insurance companies and how they think they are God1. They believe they can tell us all what dog to have, what kind of house to have, what disease it is ok to have and on and on..........frankly I am sick to death of these corporate money mongers dictating to me.....we all need to say NO to them

I had to change insurance companies because I had a dog on a company's "10 problem dogs list".
