A white-tipped shark has died of apparent stress while being used to film a Kmart advertisement in Southern California. Tell Kmart to stop using wild animals in all future advertisements.

The American Humane Society was quite right in refusing to provide another shark; the appalling thing is that they let Kmart have one in the first place. What were THEY thinking!

Sigh. I guess the "no animals were harmed during the filming of" statement doesn't apply to Sam's world? We are not worthy stewards of this planet, we can't keep from harming ourselves, let alone everything else on it, in it and above it.

Dear Howard Riefs:

I was appalled to learn that a white-tipped shark has died of apparent stress while being used to film a Kmart advertisement in Southern California.

This is just one more tragic example of how unsuitable and dangerous a production set is for captive wild animals.

Animals aren't actors. Yet thousands of these animals are forced to for the sake of human entertainment and business. Many of these animals, like this unfortunate shark, pay for this human folly with their lives.

Using animals for the purposes of selling a product is senseless, cruel and fundamentally unethical.

As Mahatma Gandhi correctly observed, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.” I urge Sears Holding Company to help America become greater by officially prohibiting the use of animals in advertisements for any and all of its brands.

I am boycotting Sears and Kmart until it does.

I am urging all my friends and colleagues to do the same.

Sincerely,

Joan AWAY McAllister (1083)
