I would never. Would you tie your dog to a post, tree, or bench and go about your business?

If you see your pet animal as being your companion, the question is then, would you tether up your companion wherever you went, or would you allow them to share in your activities...

Take your dog for a couple of long walks each day, even to dog park if one is near. Don't take them every where you go, and then leave them tied up outside or locked in a car with just wee bit of open window. They miss you when you are gone, but they aren't going to happy waiting for you all alone in strange place. Think people~

Best way to loose your pet. Never leave your pet tied up or alone anywhere.
If you got a dog, treat it with the respect and companionship you would want for yourself.

It really upsets me to see dogs and other pets tethered in shopping centres etc.
With the increase in animal abuse and theft the risk of pet theft and abuse is high and is on the increase.

I live in NYC and this is what people do when they run errands. I have done it, but only if I can see the dog from where I am.

I think it depends where you live. I live in a small town and you find lots of dogs outside the shops for a short time
I am blessed with a well behaved dog and she can even come into our Laura Ashley shop..

You are leaving them at the mercy of whomever and whatever comes by.

The author of the article is not being overly dramatic. You never know who might be passing by and what their motives are. I've heard many sad stories of dogs being lost or stolen because they were tied outside a store.

It doesn't matter where you live, it's not the locals who steal companion animals, it's the heartless thugs just passing through, they usually target the nice, peaceful, trusting areas where pets are left tethered outside stores. i've heard so many tales of horror i continually warn everyone!

I would never be this irresponsible. Makes me fear for the animals home life.

I never take my dogs with me when I shop, they are at home in the house, sleeping, they have their water and are safe. I would never tie my dog outside of a store,

I have always hated the sightr of this. In Greenwich Village, there is a mentality that the residents live in a community where their pets can be tied to a tree while shopping in a local store. You are exposing you pet to any idiot who pases by, and feeds it who knows. If it's an expensive pedigree, several have been stolen.
Walk your dog, shop before, or later.
Similiar parallel for urbinites who keep their pet in a hot car while their owner shops. Also at risk. who are you thinking of? The animal, or your lack of thought?

No way Jose!! There is no exdcuse for leaving the dog alone outside a store, even if you were only there for 2 minutes. That is long enough for dognapping, someone to hurt the dog, someone to let the dog loose to run away, and get lost/hurt. Unless you are dying or are injured, there is no reason for leaving the dod outside. And if you are so badly hurt, there are people (police, firefighters, paramedics) who will guarantee that the dog is not in any situation which would hurt it.

I do this all the time, for safety reasons I have a little tiny suitcase padlock that goes through 2 little holes on her collar and through the lead clip so nobody can dognap her. She always gets put in the shade with a little bowl of water (hate it when people don't do this!) and I'm never gone for more then a minute and a half.

We live in a good neighborhood and Jessie just sits there, many times I have found the little stut getting a belly scratch from a child.

My dogs are family members and will be protected from harm at all time, which means I would never leave them out of sight.

I would never tether my dog to a post, bench, or tree and just leave them there by themselves! It can have bad consequences in any situation and frequently it often does! Leaving your dog tethered outside a store is leaving your dog vulnerable to any number of bad outcomes. As this article says, many dogs have been abducted or taken this way. It is an open invitation to someone who doesn’t have any morals and could take and sell your dog to someone else and you would never know if your dog got into the wrong hands or a very bad situation in which he’s being abused or may even be sold to be used for research (condemning a dog to a lifetime of suffering in a lab)!
