Saskatchewan Sending Unadoptable Black Dogs West to British Columbia

We humans are very odd creatures. Even though we're supposed to be rational thinking beings, we like what we like and shun what we don't, even if there's no logical reason for our prejudice. I'm talking in this case about black dogs.

First time ever I heard THIS -how very strange and stupid!
I also never understood why people seem to prefer black CARS, though- you hardly see them in bad weather but you always see the dirt on them!

Glad that they are being sent where they can be adopted. Don't understand the prejudice.

Even the word *black* seems to have bad connotations and anything black is to be avoided (with a few exceptions like Angelika noted). I've had many black dogs, have one now, and I never considered their color when I adopted them.

I didn't realize that about dogs, but it is certainly true of cats!

Until science offers us some hope, we can not fix stupid. I'm with Angie, I had not heard of this. Dogs like cats have no idea what color they are or you are. They love ya even you don't deserve it. Black dogs dying from loneliness in no kill shelters? What is this the Middle Ages?

This is very odd. You can't fix stupid though. I hope they all find loving, happy, healthy homes. Thank you.

This is downright silly! i live in Sask and I am annoyed at this level of stupidity! I own a black cat, I have known many black dogs. There is not one bit difference between them and other colours! I'm sorry they had to be moved, but if people are that slow, maybe the poor dogs are better off not near them!

I don't know if this an article about stupidity, ignorance, self imposed hate against a color, or all of the above. What I knw is, this is just tragic.

I loved my black cat Othello and would gladly adopt a black dog when I get my own place.

Noted. It's a new one on me, and I've not had a sheltered life. I can understand a bit about black cats, with the folklore. But black dogs? I don't recall ever thinking about a dog's colour when I chose her/him or owned her/him. Huh.

It is sad that people can be so effected by the superficial that they fail to see real beauty- such as the beauty of both black cats and dog's pure souls, and sweet affectionate natures! I've always adopted my animals from shelters- and most of my dogs and cats that I adopted were black and they were always the sweetest and most gentle pets that I had! If just people would give these wonderful animals a chance and adopt them, they would realize what wonderful pets they make. We need to dispel superstitions and myths wherever they exist, because they keep us from going forward as a culture and evolving on a personal level too!

I have never adopted any of my cats because of colour. I adopt because of personality and that unquantifiable and unqualifiable (if that's a word!) "je n'est ces quoi" bond that you feel is there on first sight. Right now, I have a black/white 28.6 lb male (Primo), his litter mate a ginger tabby 25 lb male (Winston = Winnie) and their sister from the second litter, a 21.25 lb black/white/ginger (Annabelle = Annie). I have had several black/white cats, male and female as well as grey tabbies, a siamese, a tan persian that adopted me, aand a little guy that was gay. I loved them all, and they loved me.

Love should know no colour!

I say maybe something obvious or maybe stupid, I don't know. But if you love animals which difference does the color of the hair of the dog or cat? But seriously????????? :((

This is one of the saddest things I've ever heard...! I'm still shaking my head in disbelief....... For me everything is personality and love and that connection that we feel...color, size, breed...who cares !! I am glad Cher that at least these beauties are being transported to another facility where they will get another better chance at adoption........ The world is just upside down on some things isnt it now..... We just need to keep on keeping on making it better little by little, more by more, everyday a little bit better..!

Noted, tweeted, and shared. Heard this before; just goes to show how we are innately prejudiced.
