My cats hate a number of seemingly benign household items.

Umm, My cats don't seem to have the same fears.

My cats pretty much take everything in stride except for the vacuum monster from hell. Except for Amirah who reacts frantically to any loud noise, beep, alarm, doorbell. Understandable ~ she was severely abused as a kitten and who knows what she had to endure.

two of my cats do not mind the vacuum cleaner, one's deaf. they both let me vacuum them...the other cats run as soon as they hear me turning it on.

Many cats are afraid of some or all of those things. Michel was bold. He hid for no one or nothing.

one of my cats runs away when the mud room door is opened which is every day for 6 years when my husband comes home.

My cat is afraid of" the vacuum monster from Hell"(ha ha !!) ...but she is particularly terrified by the doorbell
;-( I know she had a sad life before I rescued her and I guess it reminds her of bad memories....

Thanks, Angela Lutz, for a wonderfully clever and humorous article! I especially loved the reference to vampires in acid washed jeans! The videos are awesome, especially one of my favs, the gray kitten attacking the green apples to the music from "Alien".
My cat is not a fan of the vacuum or a snapping plastic bag. (I got her as a rescue when she was one yr old so who knows what she went thru?). If she hears someone outside the door or the doorbell, she jumps up and growls and waits for me - then we go to the door together to "investigate". She is like a little "guard cat".

While dogs seem the most sound-sensitive of our pets, cats also have excellent hearing (unless they've been ear-injured, abused, or are elderly) and should not be taken on such voyages as 4th of July fireworks or going to the shooting range. For a cat, a place designed to shelter her/him from the noise of a thunderstorm or from nearby rail or highway traffic (as well as from the vacuum cleaner) can be a great boon!

Cats are very sensitive creatures. But each one is unique, just like us.

I have about 25 cats in my care, they are all different because they all have different personalities. its wrong to try to group them all together. My one Nemo is afraid of nothing and will stand around while anything is going on. Some of the others are a tiny bit skidish. The outside feral cats don't care if a truck is coming up the drive or my husband is going to crank up the weed wacker and cut the grass. They just move out of his way when he gets to whare they are LOL It's like saying all humans are the same.

Amazingingly, my cats have the same fears. The ultimate is the coffee grinder. You know the cartoon where a cat is so frightened, he has left his eyes behind to catch up with his body? That's my boys.

Don't need to snap the trash bag. I think you are doing this on purpose to scare the cats. The vaccum, some of my cats are scared of also even though I've never threatened them with it. I warn them if they are in the room if I'm going to turn it on. The blower, don't aim it at your cat. Once you do, they will never forget and the heat is much too hot for them.

I think my two cats hate noise. They don't stay around for too long when the TV is on. I've heard them growl at large trucks, like the UPS and trash trucks (esp. the air brakes). They have even growled at people and will go into hiding instantly.
