Devocalization -- the cutting of vocal cord tissue just to alter or remove a dog or cat's voice -- is widely considered an act of animal cruelty even when performed by a veterinarian.

NS&S. Your signature has been recorded. I sincerely hope the AVMA will reconsider it's position on devocalization, declawing, and similar convenience and cosmetic surgeries.

Noted, but I am not so sure about the signature...
Thank, Cher!
Cats and.dogs should not be deprived of their voices. Devocalization is mutilation and abuse. Both animals use their voices for communication, and without a voice each is left one defense mechanism less. Another form of mutilation is declawing of cats. The poor things can then no longer climb to trees to escape a ground predator, it has again lost one way of defending itself. To this category I would include mulesing of sheep and lambs, desexing of baby boars without any local or other anesthetic and painkillers, tail docking, ear clipping, branding with hot iron... Many painful and harmful acts, all of them. Buit as Victoria Stillwell said:"It is mutilation." and I agree totally with her, and even if I wouldn't have seen that episode , I would till agree. No to devocalization! No to declawing! No to animal abuse in any form!

Devocalisation and declawing are, in my book, totally unnecessary, and completely irresponsible. They inflict unnecessary pain and suffering on animals who depend on us to be their advocates.

If you don't like barking, then don't adopt a dog! If you don't like scratching, then don't get a cat! Simple.
