buy mushrooms directly from the growers, do not pick them. every year, there's a story about families dying after eating mushrooms that the pick around the San Francisco Bay Area. the mushrooms look like the ones from back home but they aren't.

Something I've never done in Britain ~or here at home ~ without an expert. Don't people have any common sense anymore??

I loved to pick my own mushrooms while I lived in Germany, but you certainly have to know what mushrooms are eatable.

All but the first two are easy to avoid. I generally tend to give wild mushrooms a wide berth.

You should never pick 'wild mushrooms' unless you're an 'expert' and know what you're doing...

I grew up in Germany and was educated as a child which mushrooms are safe to eat. My all time favourite were Pfifferlinge, wow, lightly fried in butter. But we also liked Steinpilz and Rotkšppchen, sure there were others. But, I was told at an early age which mushrooms are safe and during summer it was a family outing once a week to forage for mushrooms in a nearby forrest.
