Let's Talk: Does Your Cat Actually Like Car Travel?

I know some cats who love getting in the car and going for rides. Does your cat love it or hate it?

The only safe way I know to transport my kitties is in the carriers, and they do not like that.

All except one of the cats who live here do not like to be in their carriers, so they don't go out except to the vet. The exception, however, not only likes car travel she also likes air travel (perhaps because strangers fuss over her). Never thought I'd discriminate among the companion cats, but "the one" has her own (expensive) soft-sided carrier that none of the others are permitted (by her) to use.

Once we took our cat three states away to visit Grampa. She was fine. I had made a halter in beautiful fabric so she wouldn't get lost. She looked so pretty. Another time my big boy cat got sick in a short cab ride. Usually he was ok in a cab. So it's probably cat by cat and trip by trip.

Amirah would dearly love to ride in the car everyday, jumping over seats, window to window. But there is NO WAY I would ever take a cat in the car unless it was in a very secure carrier! I don't think there's a cat in the world that enjoys being in a carrier.

The trips to the vet are unnerving, howling experiences.

A cat in a carrier cannot claw you or jump on you while you're driving and distract you into a wreck.
A cat in a carrier (on the floor or strapped in place) is less likely to be injured in a wreck.
A cat in a carrier pukes or soils in the carrier and is easier to clean up after the trip.
A cat in a carrier sometimes considers the carrier a safe container during the trip.

I had a cat who loved to be in the car and without carrier... The ones I have now will go in the carrier, will not meawww but you can tell they will not get in a car on their own... They prefer their peaceful space at home.

When I was very young, my family moved from Michigan to Ohio, in two cars. I'm told I was in one with my father, and the cat who graced our house with his presence was in the other car with my mother--but not in a carrier. I have no idea what happened when she opened the doors to get out at various stops, but she mentioned his running around the car with wild abandon. His name was Loco, by the way--short for En Loco Infantilus (Latin for "in place of a baby" since my mother adopted him before I appeared on the scene)--but the other meaning of "Loco" fit as well.

I was going to add, Loco never cared for car travel, and he was never allowed to run wild in the car again. I also don't know if he was loose for the whole trip, or just part of it. (Again, I was very young at the time.)

They only go to the vet when in the car. Some squawk all the way, others are totallly silent. I'm sure we, who must go to the dentist, can identify with them.

Some cats detest it, some are indifferent and others love it. I always use a carrier. We once had a Siamese that had a fondness for car travel and he had managed to wiggled himself through a tear in my Dad's old convertible. My brother went for a drive down a busy highway and felt something on his shoulders. Fred, the Siamese was about to take a diving leap out the window onto the highway. Not good, so he grabbed Fred with one hand and put the window up...needless to say the tear which had gone unnoticed was quickly repaired.

I suspect that is how Fred became a stray, we had advertised for his 'pet parents', he did have a collar but no ID but his people would have to tell us what colour the collar was and a few details about Fred's appearance as he was unique and even had a 'goatee' on his chin. He gave us many years of joyful companionship but we were always on the lookout for him sneaking into a car. I suspect he was in the car with his people and took a dive out of the window, never to be seen again. He looked well looked after and I can't imagine anyone abandoning him, he had purrsonality plus. He had intriguing habits and pilfered shiny objects such as watches and rings...purrhaps he was a crow in a previous life...he would hide these under the old shag rug.

Personally, I am more of a Dog person, but had a Cat I was so in love with ~ He hated riding in the car! I had my Mom's cats in my lap when they were ill holding them driving to the Vet. Do love Lynn's comment...I would of loved to see that photo!

Our two just howl all the way to the vet and back, nearly an hour of caterwauling. What a relief to get home.
