Better yet, go vegan, While meat may not be eaten dairy cows and chickens still suffer greatly. I won't go into it but look up what happens to dairy cows who lose their children so that people can drink milk. Look up what kind of lives egg laying chickens have. I stated out being vegetarian but once I learned about the suffering of chickens and cows I gave up the diary and eggs. I eat very well too.

Sickening to imagine that because my fellow people are eaters of my fellow beings, these brothers and sisters are forced to undergo violence and abuse of their rights in such heinous, criminal ways. People must stop eating and using beings while we are guests in human bodies here visiting our mother's house...

UK only. Someone needs to figure out why Halal and Kosher slaughter prohibits stunning before slaughter. Maybe in the 'old days" slitting the animals' throats while conscious actually was better than the other alternatives- like beating the animals to 'tenderize" them before slaughter? Anyway- to be really humane, don't eat animals in the first place- "stunning" before slaughter doesn't always ensure humane treatment, especially if incompetent people are in charge of the stunning process...

We are objecting to live export to countries where this is routine whilst at the same time hypocritically allowing it in this country and in many cases it is the only meat on the menu. This process is illegal and NO EXCEPTIONS SHOULD BE MADE. I am sick of humans putting themselves above the animals. Human rights are being used to justify anything at all. I don't eat meat but this slaughter is even more offensive because it is illegal under other circumstances. No slaughter for food is humane but I can't help wondering where this 'culture' excuse is going to end. Why should any culture or religion worth preserving be steeped in blood and gore? I am not religious by the way so I am not biased in any direction except animal welfare and rights.

Signed. Sickened that we allow slaughter without pre-stunning in the UK. Another example that our animal protection laws aren't as good as I thought they were.
By the way - halal meat animal CAN be stunned first - I saw a programme about a slaughter house where this was done, they just had a guy in blessing each animal as it was stunned and slaughtered.

Many people don't realize that there are many countries that animals are not stunned first before they are slaughtered! Even in countries like the U.S. where stunning is required, because there are so many animals slaughtered every hour- as many 500- 600 large animals on the kill floor going through this process- that challenges the notion how humanely this can really be done! Is it really feasible?! And animals are very sensitive and intuitive just like us, with their senses being even more acute than ours- they can sense impending death and of course the smell of death is all around them. And the workers who work at these places have become so desensitized that they are almost without feelings for these poor animals, tragically, at their most vulnerable.

Everyone should read "Slaughterhouse “ by Gail A. Eisnitz which really pulls the curtains back on this industry and discover for themselves what really goes on and if this is an industry that they want to support. With so many more healthful and tasty alternatives to meat which has been implicated in causing cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and the pollution of our air, water, and soil associated with this industry, and the all the animal suffering involved with the meat industry, veganism seems like such a better alternative!

Shechita (Kosher slaughtering) - Let's look at it from a more scientific rather than emotional point of view.

Physiological insights into Shechita (with a comprehensive bibliography) Veterinary Record (2004)

http://www.shechitauk.org/uploads/tx_resources/Physiological_insights_into_Shechita__S.D.Rosen__Veterinary_Record_2004_01.pdf

The author discusses the scientific literature on the behavioural responses to Shechita as well as neurophysiological studies relevant to the assessment of pain, and concludes that Shechita is a painless and humane method of animal slaughter
