Dog people know that small dogs can get nippy and any dog can react out of fear or anxiety. This is something that anyone who handles dog should know and should know how to handle.

Oh please, an 8lb dog? I think this groomer is most definitely in the wrong business. I had a friend that owned a grooming business just for large breeds, she had acquired a few nips over the years, but because she knew how to handle the larger dogs it was a rare event and she never killed one.

That is absurd and terribly sad! And if I had the chance I would throw that so called groomer across the room.

This makes me so flippin mad, I can't see straight! What a horrific thing to do to someone's beloved pet. I hope that the Calhouns win their lawsuit and I hope the groomer does some jail time for animal cruelty. I mean, seriously, you were afraid a tiny little 8lb dog was going to kill you? I don't know whether to offer this groomer toilet paper or a breath mint for the crap that is coming out of her mouth! Grr. Thanks Cher.

I would have gone in and bashed this retarded bitch into another world. How terrible, poor Darby, you were only meant to be groomed, little did you know that some despicable human was going to end your life. Your poor owners, how terrible for them, I can only imagine their grief. Too horrible for words!

This POS deserves a big, mad, husky, man, to throw HER up against a wall and KILL her!! I am seeing DEEP RED right now!!!!!! If I could add rocket boosters to my wheelchair I'd go down there and run her down myself and nobody would charge me because I'd wear my black sunglasses and claim to be blind!!

Appalling. To kill a Maltese and claim she feared for her life? Pathetic. She should be jailed.

My heart goes out to this loving couple who lost their little Maltese companion. To the P O S who killed this innocent EIGHT POUND DOG, be very afraid because bad karma is at your back and you will pay for your horrendous act. I know that my three shih tzu's love where I take them to be groomed. They jump out of the car and PUSH the front gate to let themselves in. After this horrendous article, am not only lucky but feel blessed my companions are so well taken care of. When are our moronic politicians going to implement or put serious legal penalties to animal abusers?

Something went seriously wrong here. I hope the courts make it right- at least financially. The dog was adorable.

The groomer is inexperienced and should not be around animals if they don't know how to handle them.

There is no excuse for this. I agree totally that she is a liar and should not be working with animals. Sure dogs can be nippy but this is a gross abuse of power and no dog should suffer like that.

I sure hope the court sees through her and realizes that an 8 pound dog can not do that much harm. She should have a record. Just like there is a criminal background check for those who work with children there should be one for those who work with animals as they are as vulnerable as children. My heart goes out to her people who are grieving. I can deal with death but not when it happens like this.

This was Not a professional or that cute little dog would still be alive. I sincerely hope that so-call pro was fired immediately. If not, then make sure every single person bringing a pet to that place needs to be warned their dear family member may not live through the experience.

She obviously is in the wrong profession. It can't be the first time a pet nipped her; did she throw all those other pets against a wall just to defend herself. That little dog weighs less than my cat, and my cat nips me all the time when she's playing, and I've never ever thought of throwing her against a wall for it.

This is a horrific criminal act and she should be charged with murder. She is obviously lying about fearing for her life. Thank you for exposing this horrendous crime.

One word for this so called professional groomer....MUZZLE!

Heinous treatment and despicable behavior...animals do not treat animals the way humans treat animals, and quite frankly, each other!

Not sure what threat a eight pound dog would have, and a groomer should be trained for this, and should know what a muzzle is, for surely they have been nipped by a dog before, so I can'!t understand a reasoning for killing it at all! Glad there is a law suit coming! RIP baby!

She didn't fear for her life, she lost her temper probably because the dog was nipping at her. A tiny dog like that would have been easy to handle. I have owned Maltese Terriers. They are not a dangerous breed.

omg...if she was so afraid of the dog, she should not have groomed it to start with. She could have put a muzzle on it. In no way should she have thrown the dog into a wall...unreal. I feel terribly sad for this elderly couple. I know how hard it is to lose a pet, especially when you do not have any children. I do hope they file a lawsuit.

A groomer can have a way to restrain the dog as they work, right? That would be better than throwing it against the wall.We groomed our own dogs when we had them.

This bitch feared for her life because of an eight pound dog? Even my youngest kitten weighs more than that. Her reaction was pretty sick, and it wouldn't surprise me if she were annoyed or angered with the pup anyway because he was making threatening noises out of fear and anxiety. If she were a true pro, she would known how to treat this kind of behavior. Some people are themselves a threat to the very earth. .

Shocking that a woman could feel threatened 'for her life' by an eight pound dog. I grew up terrified of dogs because when I was seven two large dogs roaming and appearing from nowhere ripped a kitten out of my arms and killed the kitten before we could save her...but in no way would I have ever been threatened so much by a dog of eight pounds where I would have 'feared for my life.' Having had a few medium sized dogs I fail to see how her life could ever be in danger. Very sad and I hope that there is a legal settlement of this. If she believed that she was going to get nipped she could have backed away rather than hurl the dog against a wall.

As for the use of the word 'retarded' in one of the comments, there are people who are through no fault of their own are born and are developmentally challenged and many of them would show far more intelligence than the woman grooming the unfortunate dog did in this sad situation.

People, this is a Care2 site! I know you're angry at what this awful woman did, but your comments on how violently you would punish her aren't appropriate. You sound as bad as she is. Violence never solved anything.

unbelievable cruelty. Apparently the groomer was not a professional. What about the vet clinic? What criteria do they apply for employing their staff?

How very sad. I hope that justice will be done for the little dog, and that the killer will not be free to hurt or kill any more animals, or people.

I'm not a dog person by any means, but this type of behavior is completely inexcusable and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The little dog didn't deserve that, nippy or not, and his poor people had every right to believe their "baby" would come home alive. My heart aches for them. Doesn't that "groomer" realize that dogs sometimes bite and she should be prepared just in case? She is in the wrong business. She is also an ill-tempered loose canon who should never be allowed around dogs, cats, probably even kids, lest they make her "fear for her life" and she kills again. Geez, what is wrong with some people today? RIP Darby. My condolences to the family.

Agreed Julie W, a thoughtful comment. While it can be emotionally tempting in the face of cruelty against the innocent to spout vengeful wrath, it hardly helps ourselves if we talk about violence against the perpetrator, turning them into shark bait or killing them or slow torture or whatever revenge one wishes to implement because one feels intense anger because a dog was killed ruthlessly.

We are, for the most part, a society based on democratic law and the idea of vigilante 'justice' drags us down to the level of the perpetrator. I have been the victim of violent crime but I will never advocate violence against a perpetrator. Inside I may be seething but there is the law and the court system. Sometimes the sentences are far too lenient or sometimes a perpetrator gets off with less than they deserve, but there are times when seeing people who are liberal in nature talk of the same kind of violence (or sometimes worse) this does tend to lower our own selves to the same level if we did see such things carried out in reality. Anger and shock are to be expected but we can't let ourselves end up in the same pit as the people who do such things. If we ever did go a society where we meted out our own justice for all the wrongs, civilized society would soon disappear.
