Stop Testing Botox on Animals ! PLEASE SIGN ! !

Animals  (tags: animals, AnimalWelfare, cruelty, environment, protection, suffering )

- 1663 days ago -
As you know, for the LD50 test, groups of animals are injected with different doses of Botox in the abdomen. They are subjected to terrible pain. They suffer from paralysis, impaired vision and respiratory distress.

S & N, thanks, my friend. These tests are totally unnecessary, we already know how they work on human skin and don't need to know how it works on animal skin, they won't be using it. Shame on you for torturing these animals for no good reason at all. Is it just to collect money from the government for your so-called "research"?

Why is this petition targeting Allergan Inc., the company that has already developed an alternative test method and uses it wherever it's been approved?

Whoever is responsible for this petition - I recommend you read your source materials a bit more diligently next time. The petition contains a link to an article by ECEAE (The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments). It includes this piece of information:
"The American company Allergan has recently received an EU-wide approval for an alternative test method for their botox products. The test is based on human cells and does not use any animals. This proves that it is possible to test botox without animal cruelty. "

I remember how this in vitro test method was hailed as a great victory by several animal welfare organizations two years ago. The reason why Allergan has not yet replaced 100% of animal tests with in vitro tests is because every regulatory agency of the world has not yet approved the alternative method. In a statement in June 2011, when the alternative test method had been approved by FDA, the company expected to be able to reduce animal testing by up to 95% or more within the next three years. Here's more information on the subject, 'Corporate Statement on Animal Testing',
Read especially how it ends: "Allergan is discussing how to license the technology to other parties that share its commitment to implementing non-animal alternatives to animal-based assays in the manufacture of their medical products."
Nope, I don't think I'll sign this petition. I think writing to Ipsen and Merz-Pharma is a more efficient way of eradicating LD50 testing for Botox - the ECEAE article (mentioned above) includes printable letters with contact information.

Please leave my signature on the petition.

Nyack, "If Allegen has switched with success, then they should tell Ipsen and Merz-Pharma. - -
I would hope Allegen would inform Ipsen and Merz-Pharma. if Allergan is discussing how to license the technology to other parties."

Do you think that a) Ipsen and Merz-Pharma are not aware of the existence of the alternative test method or b) it should be Allergan's responsibility to persuade other companies to switch to in vitro testing?

And, most importantly, do you think it is fair and justifiable to attack the company that has used ten years and over $60 million to create an in vitro test method, expecting to replace at least 95% of animal tests within a few years, with the same petition and same message as those two companies that still use LD50? Usually, when you read about such a milestone, the company in question is sent messages that commend its efforts to reduce animal suffering, not messages that scold it for animal cruelty.

"I was shocked to learn that your company conducts cruel animal experiments for the batch testing of your products BOTOX, BOTOX Cosmetics and VISTABEL" isn't exatly true - these three products are brand names owned by Allergan - Ipsen sells botulinum toxin under brand name DYSPORT, Merz's products are BOCOUTURE and XEOMIN.

The fact that ECEAEA's campaign site contains letters to Ipsen and Merz-Pharma, but NOT to Allergan, speaks for itself. An organization that campaigns specifically against animal experiments does not attack Allergan but rather raises it as a positive example - now what do you think about that?

I'm a bit surprised why Galderma, a joint venture of Nestlé and L'Orèal, is so rarely mentioned among companies that produce botulinum toxin (brand name Azzalure). To my knowledge, Galderma still tests on animals and isn't developing any alternative methods. According to Ipsen, it has joined forces with Merz to create its own cell-based assay to reduce and replace animal tests. If anyone is interested, more info here:

Saying it is necessary otherwise humans wouldn't have this or that medicine or cosmetic is imoral, it is spescism,it is saying that humans worth more than the rest of the living beings, which is just imoral. I have noted the arguments above... whether or not a company is, (or was) testing on animals should not be an issue it is only a fine point. The fact is we should find other ways to test products without using any live subjects... stuff as harmful as botox shouldn't be tested for the cosmetic industry, it should be banned. No animal deserves our frankenstein-like behaviours... honestly, if the tables were turned and "Planet of the Apes" was our scenario, we'd soon be screaming!

NOTED AND SIGNED !!!! The only thing which annoyed me about the petition is the fact that my "scathing" comment didn't show !!! Despite Pia's claims to the contrary ........ nowhere (even in her quote) does it say that these companies are using the viable alternative- that in itself is DISGUSTING !!! How can you possibly give any "credit" to a company who finds an alternative and then DOESN'T use it ??? My God, that is truly sickening !!! Thanks to both Cher and Nyack ...... hope the "notes" will be enough to bring this to a wider audience !!!

I thought I had written an answer to Nyack's latest comments a few days ago but apparently Care2 has eaten my comment. Here it is again:

Nyack, "In the same way that just because Michael Vick no longer participates in dog fighting- does not mean that he is now a wonderful person."

There's a significant difference between Michael Vick and Allergan: dog fighting is illegal in US. Participating in it is not only illegal, but also a voluntary choice. Allergan, as any pharmaceutical company, is REQUIRED BY LAW to conduct certain set of tests before selling their products. I know this may come as surprise to you, but Botox is used as a medical treatment (e.g. for cervical dystonia, blepharospasm and strabismus) and is thus categorized as a medicine.

"I would like to know why they are still animal testing on the remaining 5% for the sake of YOUR frigging wrinkles."
Since you didn't quite get it from my previous comment, I'll tell you again:
Because not every regulatory agency in every country in the world has yet approved of the cell-based assay. The speed in which LD50 tests for Botox can be replaced by the alternative method depends on the regulatory agencies. Write to the countries that haven't yet approved it and ask them to do it.

And since there seems to be some confusion about what companies test on animals and why I'm criticizing the inclusion of Allergan on this petition, here are some points in a nutshell:
- Allergan Inc. announced in 2001 that it had developed an in vitro test after using ten years and more than $60 million in the development. It expected up to 95% of animal tests (LD50) to be replaced by the new cell-based assay within the next three years. This was hailed as a great victory by several animal welfare organizations.
- So far, at least the regulatory agencies of EU and Switzerland, and FDA have approved of the alternative method. (I haven't checked the current situation elsewhere in the world.)
- The other two companies that are targeted by this petition, Ipsen and Merz, still use the LD50 test. Ipsen has announced that it has joined forces with Merz to develop their own alternative method - thus, they don't seem to be willing to co-operate with Allergan to get a licence and use the already existing in vitro method.

All the foolish women who try to hold on to their lost youth by having Botox injections should be made to go and see what animals have to go through to test the stuff. Why don't they test it on the users instead? If they want to be beautiful - very debatable anyway, they always look like Zombies - let them test it themselves and not make animals suffer.
