The Things They Leave Behind: Thoughts on Losing An Animal Companion

The knowing started about a week before my kitty died. The knowing comes after that disbelief stage they talk about, and with it comes the dread that sits like lead in your stomach and fills your lungs, making it difficult to breathe deeply.

I still mourn the loss of my first pet. They give us boundless, unfettered, unconditional love. They help keep us grounded, put smiles on our faces when nothing else will. They work their way into our hearts and souls and stay there.

and that's it ~ the only comfort to the great loss. you gave your love and protection and carried them all the way until their last breath.

If it didn't hurt, it wouldn't have been love, I suppose. In the end, you can 'remember and smile', but it takes a bloody long time.

I really don't mourn for long; I carry the knowledge that we both gave our best and our all. I know that they had the best life possible ~ the memories tell me so ~ and we used our time together well.

I have lost so many animals, and every time I lose one its so heartbreaking for me, because they are part of my family.

I know that feeling all too well. They are our kids, our babies and the only consolation we can take is that we provided them with love, a home and a good life. The missing never ends

I agree with Barbara-but this is afterwards. Having to put my first cat into a carrier to be put down was the hardest thing I hard to do in my life.

I don't always mourn the same for every animal. I miss them forever but for some reason the last 2 around Sept 29 have done a number on me. When they are suffering I don't extend that suffering .So that usually makes it easier to let go. I miss all of them but Sammy and Jaxx I can't get over.

One of them I miss like crazy. I miss both so much. They were ferals.Sammy was such a good boy for a feral and he only slept inside in the winters -his choice!!!! He slept on his own blanket w/me. He was an outdoorsman. My home was his home for many years and he could do what ever he wanted. He learned things easily. He was a heavy thinker. A good boy . Different than all other feral cats I have dealt with. Jaxx was the other one. They were very different but I can't get over either of them.

With Sammy I knew he was going to die. I wish I did more for him. Evdryone was spoiled but I just can't get over him at all. He would knock on my window where I usually am .He knocked and screamed. He usually knocked to come inside. I went to the front door and I said come on baby. He barely was walking around to the door, head down ,stepped a tiny bit in the door and collapsed. I checked every part of his body as fast as I could and in 15 minutes we were at the vet for him to be put down. He looked at me and begged for help. I wish he were here right now. Like I said I always mourn but not like I am with Sammy . Jaxx went right after Sammy and that was not expected and I didn't have time.
TY for the post Cher!!

This is a terrible experience to go through, and the mourning never seems to go away completely, because our pets are a part of our family.
Noted,
Thanks Cher.
