There are other traditional peace symbols the Pope could use to send a dramatic message without harming any creatures.

I was saddened at the fate of the doves Pope Francis released only to see them attacked as prey. I love Pope Francis and I signed and suggested he just Bless the doves and send them back to their home. It is a disturbing thing to watch the emblem of peace being attacked and disheartening to peaceful efforts.

No I will not sign. Pull your heads out of your nether regions. The Pope did not harm a single creature MOTHER NATURE did. Sorry to inform you of this but doves are prey animals for other birds. The fact that you are offended by nature taking its course in a civilized setting where you would rather not see it is irrelevant. By the way where is petition banning them at weddings, funerals et alia.

Animals raised in captivity for entertainment is a form of slavery, Llyod-

If you think slavery of any form is acceptable, then perhaps it is YOUR head that needs to be out of your "NETHER REGIONS".

Nycak, nice try but your personal ideology does not change the definition of slavery from being the treatment of persons as property to be bought and sold at will and it makes a much sense to make animals persons as it does corporations. While it is true that all humans are animals it is not true that all animals are humans and all the anthropomorphizing of animals will not change that. And if you truly 'believe' that raising animals in captivity is slavery just when do you plan on shutting down all the animals shelters and emancipating all the house pets. Or is this just another backdoor means to make eating meat a crime against humanity.

At any rate- if you do not wish to sign the petition- then don't.

But I'm not going to sit up here and listen to you insinuate that, because someone does not agree with your philosophy, then their "Heads are in their nether regions".

I dont agree with trapping animals for use of entertainment, anymore than I believe in kidnapping children to participate in a wedding party. If you do- then? Just dont sign the petition- Honestly no one (except yourself) is impressed by how smart you think you are.

S&N. Sad. So are the folks that feel the need to flame someone who does not agree. There are petitions on here with which you may not agree. So move on to something that does work for you. We all have a lot of passion here, does there need to be issues made of disagreements from either side? Have to agree with Nyack. If we can't always agree, and we won't, still no need to insult.

I should mind my business but your comment bothered me Lloyd... yes the doves died due to mother nature but they wouldnt have been there at that spot at that time if humans werent involved. They will be prey as it is,.they dont need human involvement..and they dont need to be captive for any reason.

Domestic pets depend on us and as all creatures raised with humans ENJOY us if treated with love. and that goes for ALL ANIMALS..pigs cows, bears, tigers, etc as there are THOUSANDS of examples. wild animals have no business being pets but dogs and cats are a tad different. (IMO)

and when you eat meat, your harming innocent creatures, which is animal abuse which in essence is a crime against humanity..just my 2 cents

Children released two peace doves from the Vatican window last Sunday, only to watch in horror as a seagull and crow attacked the birds moments later. Videos of the attack flooded the media, disturbing the world and suggesting violence, hopelessness, war, despair and anything but peace. However, I don't believe that was the Pope's intent as he has shown himself to be a very compassionate man.

S&N. I believe Pope Francis will think twice before releasing doves again.
We should all protest if anyone releases doves for any event.
The only allowable releases should be of specially trained doves who know how to find their way home and avoid predators.

I could let this drop but that 'tad of difference' seems to depend on personal preference and nothing else. The doves/show birds, dogs, cats, horses, food animals in particular are not just domesticated animals but at this point in time have been so Genetically Modified by humans through selective breeding as to no longer actually be natural animals. And with the exception of illegal trade most of the "exotic animals", lions, tigers, bears et alia in captivity are part of endangered species breeding programs or have been bred for the exotic animal pet trade. And to be honest there are no such thing as innocent or guilty animals as they can not make a conscious decision to act un-naturally, and for some that includes traits bred in by their human creators. Humans can be guilty or innocent but that is at least in the case of pets, captive breeding stock for endangered species, for profit show animals, and domesticated food animals totally dependent on the moral and/or ethical choices made by those passing judgment.

Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.
