The rapid expansion in oil and gas development enabled by hydraulic fracturing (commonly referred to as "fracking") is driving many communities to make decisions without access to comprehensive and reliable scientific information about its potential

I live in the UK where fracking is just getting underway, in fact today two major drilling sites were announced. We might be behind the US in fracking but I hope that we learn from the mistakes that have been made and don't simply allow ourselves to be blinded by the potential financial gain (incidentally, in the UK we are constantly being told how the US is benefiting from fracking, stories by Care 2 members living in the US tell a different tale).

The earth beneath our feet is not the neatly constructed layer cake illustrated in slick commercials. Things get stirred up down there, and voids are filled with enormous plumes of polluted materials. The "frackquake" is a very real phenomenon; only so much water can be forced back underground before ruptures occur.
