Removing up to 2 million plastic carryout bags from the system, Los Angeles has taken a major step in curbing local plastic pollution. Where statewide policy failed to show, Angelenos have taken environmental sustainability into their own hands and set

Sorry Cher. I use the plastic bags I receive as trash bags or donate them to one of our thrift stores or food banks. I do use my own fabric bags a lot to reduce the number I receive, but do not believe they should be banned.
I also pick up any plastic litter to keep it from going into a river or bay where it can be conceived as food by marine life. People just need to be more responsible!! I think we on Care2 are, but others still need to be educated. Thanks.

Agree with Virgene - do same as her, using bags for my garbage or donate them to food shelf or our local church store. If I didn't have them for my garbage I'd have to take the dwindling amount of cash left after bills to buy bags. I believe in using and reusing them and do understand the problem they've become with reckless use. Can't blame the bag for the users' careless disgard.

I disagree with Virgene- the majority of people refuse to get "educated", else their own common sense would have told them long ago to stop this vile trashing of environment. Only A BAN could make for lasting change, I'm afraid. But I applaud her responsible use of plastic bags, if only that example would find more followers.!

Yes Virgene, you're right, people need to be educated. When children learn it, they educate their parents... this way round ;-)
It's so silly, I never take any plastic bag from anywhere and I always wonder where they're all coming from, those I've got at home???

Signed and noted with thanks Cher. When you see so many hanging from trees, wires etc. after a strong wind, it makes me realize that so many people here in Canada are not doing the right thing. Most of the superstores now charge .05 cents a bag, and that still doesn't stop people - raise the charge!!!

I STOPPED using ANY plastic bags a long time ago. There really is NO NEED for them at all. I see people at the grocery store CONSTANTLY buying plastic bags for their groceries. I really don't understand that at all. Sure we have to pay for them but it doesn't really slow things down. I myself have dozens of cloth bags that I wash and change up often. In fact when they ask me at the grocery store if I want any bags, I always wrinkle up my nose at them and say NO THNX! lol

We always take reusable bags but I always have, when I was a child carrier bags were paper, they tore if it rained, and you had to pay for them so my mother always used reusable bags and so do I. Shortly a ban on free plastic bags is due to be introduced across Europe (the EU area), this should have some significant effect on the amount that enters the environment.

Thankyou for this ! No matter how many times you use and reuse, plastic bag remains a plastic bag, even the ones that disintegrate into tiny fragments still remain tiny fragments of plastic.
Time travel to a time before the invent of this non-biodegradable disaster: how did our parents & their parents manage without this handy evil bag?? Come on! We could do it. Yes it needs little adjustment from all of us, need to be more organised, but imagine, one fine day, removal of the plastic bag from the face of the earth?? When? Up to us, isn't it?
