An Ethical Approach to Environmental Protection

Peace and the survival of life on earth as we know it are threaten by human activities which lack a commitment to humanitarian values. Destruction of nature and nature resources results from ignorance, greed and lack of respect for the earth's living things.

This lack of respect extends even to earth's human descendants, the future generations who will inherit a vastly degraded planet if world peace does not become a reality, and destruction of the natural environment continues at the present rate.

Our ancestors viewed the' earth as rich and bountiful, which it is. Many people in the past also saw nature as inexhaustibly sustainable, which we now know is the case only if we care for it.

It is not difficult to forgive destruction in the past, which resulted from ignorance. Today, however, we have access to more information, and it is essential that we re-examine ethically what we have inherited, what we are responsible for, and what we will pass on to coming generations. Clearly this is a pivotal generation. Global communication is possible, yet confrontations take place more often than meaningful dialogues for peace.

Our marvels of science and technology are matched if not out-weighed by many current tragedies, including human starvation in some parts of the world, and extinction of other life forms.

Exploration of outer space takes place at the same time as the earth's own oceans, seas, and freshwater areas grow increasingly polluted, and their life forms are largely unknown or misunderstood.

Many of the earth's habitats, animals, plants, insects, and even microorganisms that we know of as rare or endangered, may not be known at all by future generations. We have the capacity, and the responsibility. We must act before it is too late.

To Dayanna Hillier:
You are assuming that the Teapublicans and Big Business, actually, care about the future of our planet. In a perfect world, they would, and I respect your comments, greatly.
The problem is, they about one thing, and that is the 'here and now'.

Future generations are unimportant to them, and I believe that NOTHING you can say to them will help the situation. You can't rationalize with people who don't care. THEY JUST DON'T CARE !

In my opinion, ending the draft was one of the worst things our government did, in terms of keeping patriotism alive and caring for our fellow man.
When only the middle and lower classes enlisted, they were and are the ones who die and face mental and physical difficulties. All of our young people should have to enlist and either, the armed forces OR perform civilian service in some way. This would be fair and honest.

We are currently fighting a very similar issue in Australia, with the speedy expedition of grants for a massive coal port on the Great Barrier Reef, the worlds largest ecosystem, I cringe to think our so-called leaders don't care for our future or the damage they are agreeing to, in the name of progress. There is no progress if life ceases to exist, because our little planet cant take anymore of a beating. Like the countless civilisations we've managed to send into the annals of history, ours will be next and last.

The sooner we stop using coal (and oil, and natural gas) the better for everyone!

Noted & Signed with following comment: An environmental impact statement, a public interest review and public hearing must be required first to rule out any potential dangers that may be a fall out from this potentially very harmful proposed coal export facility especially since so much of the Louisiana coast has been so damaged by the gulf oil spill and in light of the very recent coal ash pit leaks and discharges which have had such a destructive impact on many environments. Louisiana doesn't need any more toxic chemicals being released into its important coastal areas that are so critical to marine and bird life!
