As a girl-about 12 or so, I learned of the Siberian Tiger's rarity and endangered status. That was more than 30 years ago.

I don't know how they manage to hold on. I read again and again that like the Cheetah, they have become "bottle necked". Meaning there isn't enough genetic diversity for surviving populations to ever be able to thrive.

Being "genetically bottle necked" means that the wild breeding pairs have at one point, been reduced to so few pairs that all the offspring thereafter have some type of inbreeding. This is a death blow to any surviving off spring. The genetic diversity is no more. All these inbred traits will result in severe deficiencies(deformities) of the species in question.

I think the only way to ever restore these wild populations is to rely on the breeding pairs in zoo's introducing their genetic diversity back into the wild populations.
