All great ideas grow from simple places, and this was no different. After Ritz received bulbs as a gift from someone, he threw them behind the radiator because he didn't know what else to do with them. When they began to sprout, an idea struck home.

Saw a similar "green job" on TV one time. Not conventional gardening, but to save plant food there was a combbination with breeding fisch (ground floor) and Garden (upstairs):Fischwater pumped up for the plants (no plant dirt but ceramic) went through the system and piped back to the fish. This amized me because of the little costs to recive food: for those who eat fish and all the others eating veggies!

It's amazing how going green not only generates good jobs, but helps people in other ways too.

He sounds as inspirational as my science teacher who taught me that the environment and animals are as important as us if not more important.

All kids need is one good and caring person behind them to grow. he is not only growing plants but kids who will care more so many things. Sometimes it is a parent, a friend, and sometimes it is a great teacher. Mr. Ritz is one of those teachers that students will not forget.

Amazing what just one person can do and how much of a difference his determination, apparently alone, makes. And how sad that people kept stealing the first efforts? It's one of the wonders I have from working in the ghetto. Even when trying to help, the inhabitants themselves, seemed to want to sabotage any effort. Kudos for his finding a way.

What a wonderful and truly great teacher and human being he is. An inspiration to all teachers. The best part of it is his students will carry the knowledge onward and teach others as well. We would make any of his students very welcome to teach here in Los Angeles.

Awesome! Gardens like this will heal us all, teach us all and grow us all and solve so many problems...Creating community, sense of purpose, real relationship with the earth and providing food and where it's needed in the city alongside the people. A great man not just helping to grow a garden but helping to grow peace.

This is awesome and shows a teacher that is really trying to make a difference. Lessons like these may stick with a child all their lives and be passed on to future generations.
