Because thousands are killed after their short time in the racing industry, the average lifespan of a racing Greyhound is around 18 months.

Noted with great thanks Cher

So sad they are only babies at 18 months.

Before I adopted my big-o puppy from the local shelter, I was kinda sorta thinking about getting a greyhound. I looked around on the internet, and read lots of stuff about them and what is too often a sad life. Dog racing is legal here in Florida, and most tracks allow rescue groups to set-up weekend stations to pass out info and educate the public, and encourage adoptions..

A few prisons here in this state do rehab too, teaching greyhounds how to walk up stairs, walk on shiny floors, and just generally how to act inside a home - an place they know nothing about. These dogs don't know that all food is not theirs to eat, because they've never been socialized to know anything but kennel feeding time. Using the prison system, to teach them the basics of acceptable behavior makes it more likely these precious dogs will stay in a home once they've found one that matches their needs.

I believe they would make an incredible pet, but since I have 6 cats, I was advised to refrain from getting a dog that spent the first years of it's life chasing a fake tail around a track . . .
