Several years ago I had the opportunity to fly over what used to be the edge of the Everglades and as of then, had been drained and developed. I was appalled at the extent of building which had been given the green light where once the 'Glades' met the coastal areas.
Gov. Crist's proposal is a drop in the bucket to what has been lost, however, if teamed with a ban on all future development & farming in this area it MAY prevent total destruction.
Too bad legislators didn't have the fore-sight to stop the madness 30+ years ago instead of lining their pocket$ with Big $ugar & developers $$$

While this step forward makes environmentalists like me stand up and cheer, I do feel compassion for the sugar employees who are losing their jobs of 30+ years. Thank you, Florida, for this huge step in the right direction!!! Go, Everglades. Good article, Cher.

The leading cause of growth and development is children and immigration. I have no children, and plan on having one child and adoption.

Our commissioners approve development because it brings in revenue. It also destroys habitat as it may lower property value due to more housing available.

We can elect commissioners opposed to growth.

When population goes down, so will demand for land and resources.
