Pets Also Suffering From Disaster

Animals  (tags: Japan, Tohoku Kanto Earthquake, suffering, disaster, on their own, not-pets rule, shelters, seperated, dogs, cats, pets )

Their fur caked with mud, pet dogs trot forlornly in rubble-filled streets along the devastated coastline, foraging for scraps and searching for owners.

The basic issue is simple: "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?" (Jeremy Bentham, philosopher and animal rights activist; 1748-1832.)

Noted with Sadness for the pets that can't get rescued. This is not right at all, the rescuers should be let into rescue as long as they know what the risks are...
Tks Naoko....

Sunny, while I understand you upset as this is surely very sad, please consider that in a really critial moment like the March 11 quake and tsunami, people need to think only of their own survival. There is a saying, "tsunami tendenko" in the region, where people have been experiencing tsunamis again and again in the history. "Tendenko" means "by oneself," meaning when tsuami comes, just run and escape, without even worry about families.

I'm so sorry for all the abandoned animals that have been left behind and for their owners, many of them who had to make terrible decisions about leaving their pets behind. Who knows how one would act if faced with such a tragedy? Hopefully the majority of us will never need to make such decisions.
