When we went to boarding school we saw photos of former students in the hall next to the chapel. They were the Mexican graduates who were forced to marry icky old men. The girls looked so sad & heartbroken in the photos.

"Soon-to-be-wed Faiz Mohammed, 40, and Ghulam Haider, 11, at her home in a rural village in Afghanistan."

That caption from that disgusting photo says it all. That pedophile ought be in jail, not preparing to violate a child. I hope the UN's reach extends into every country that allows this heinous crime against women, against humanity, to be perpetrated. Regardless the religious affiliation of any such country. These are criminals, not governments and girls need be protected from this barbaric practice. Now. Words fall on deaf ears in far too many places, girls deserve a chance to live, to be educated, to enjoy life as the free spirits they are, not enslaved to perverted old pedophiles as their personal slaves. What girl would make such a choice? What loving family would allow it? The answer is the same to both questions. NONE. Let the world and each member country of the UN make THIS part of their national law and change their culture if necessary to make it such that girls and women are made full members of every society, every culture and every country. Anything less is less than human. And we should be MUCH better than that. Every one, every where. There is no defense to this practice, none. Not in the 21st century. That such an action is even needed is but another example of how disgusting the male domination of this planet is.

This issue upset me so much and challenges me so much I hardly know what to say. I understand in times and places where life is rural, education pretty nonexistent, and a family of one's own is all that a person aspires to that young woman after menstruation and puberty might marry. But before? This is beyond me.

Good on the UN. But I'm not sure that it will make any difference. Have to keep trying though.

Child marriage should not be allowed, but at what age is consent to be. In the UK this is 16, but in many other counties it is lower.

Laws made and enshrined by MEN.........despicable and gut wrenching. The Governments of the day must be held accountable and change things for the better for these girls.

These countries are paradise for pedophiles. Their government approves, and the laws protects them.
Change is always slow. Many generations of little girls will experience hell on earth before any change occurs.
If hate could kill those animals would be dead!

Noted and shared on Facebook. Thanks Gene for your succinct statements. Marrying a child is pedophilia and should never be sanctioned by the state.

Child marriage is domestic and sexual slavery, it is abhorrent.

I couldn't get this story out of my mind last night. And the more I thought about it, the more connected to sex trafficking it seems to me. This is not a religion, it is an organized ring of confirmed, in your face, pedophiles operating with the full consent and cooperation of their government, their culture and their religion. Anywhere else, that man would be in jail. Sadly, the United States is NOT immune here, many of these girls trafficked end up here, just as abused and tormented by pimps as that little girl in the picture in this story. How can a world that calls itself civilized tolerate such a thing? Because we are afraid we might hurt the feelings of the Taliban? Or those criminals who shot Malala and are STILL vowing to finish the job to this minute? We worry about offending Islam so much that we keep our official mouths shut while 11 year old girls are sold into sexual slavery? THIS is what happens to the women of Afghanistan when the Taliban takes control again. At some point, at some time, if we truly wish all the people of this world, including its children, we are going to have confront those who practice this barbarity either religiously or through their sexual perversion or their desire to make a living off the suffering of children. To remain silent is to accept this as the norm and say things like "it is a cultural" difference, well, NO, it is not. It is a crime and it always will be. THAT should be the starting point of the discussion and the ending point should be the abolition of child marriage and sexual trafficking of girls and women. We start at home by passing the Violence Against Women Act, Mr. Boehner. Then we move forward in concert with other nations and the UN to find and punish all who commit acts like this, I don't give a fig what their reason is, it is and always will be wrong. Evil triumphs when good people do nothing, and this is a perfect example. Leave this children to the living hell they will endure for fear of antagonizing a religious practice that is monstrous? What kind of people ARE we? Ick.

Those poor girls. If they were ruled by women, this probably wouldn't happen. Education is vital.
