There are a few screams that continue to grow louder as the main thoroughfare approaches. They are not human, that much is clear.

I quickly move toward the sounds, expecting to find a few street cats battling over territory, but instead am shocked at what unfolds in front of me. There are two teenagers laughing. One holds what appears to be a 6-month-old kitten in his arms. Then, shockingly, he drops the kitten towards the ground, grabbing his leg as he tumbles toward the cement. In one swooping motion, the kitten is then tossed high into the air towards the friend, who luckily catches the young animal. The kitten’s screams of horror are unmistakable.

Thankfully, a few yells at the youngsters force them to put the little kitten onto ground and allows the little guy to scramble underneath a nearby car, where it appears his mother is waiting.

The incident is not abnormal for Egypt and how it treats its animal population. One Egyptian woman told me how she was walking downtown one evening and saw a middle-aged man kick a kitten into a wall, undoubtedly ending the young cat’s life.

“It was shocking and horrifying,” she told Bikyamasr.com shortly after the incident.

But it is not only how Egyptians deal with street cats that is shocking. Working animals are dealt with as if they feel no pain. The Brooke Institute – a leading international organization that works with local workers to better the treatment of working animals – told Bikyamasr.com how many Egyptians who employ donkeys or horses for labor do very little in terms of assisting them when they get old, are wounded, or fall ill.

Horrible. What mass insensitivity to animals' pain. What kind of cruel mentality pervades in Egypt?

In Egypt, as in other Islamic lands, cursed are the animals, cursed are the females, 90% of them are subjected to female genital mutilation, cursed are the Egyptian Christian Copts who are the most direct descendants of the TRUE ancient Egyptians, and who preceeded the Egyptian Muslim-Arab hordes that now control Egypt. The Coptic Christians used to be the majority and now they are being killed, kidnapped, burned and driven out.

Any living thing that is weak and need of protection, animals, females, Christians are especially vulnerable. Save the innocent.

People who do this to animals ought to....

Many Egyptians seem to have an animal cruelty gene in their DNA. I've seen animal rights videos shot secretly in Egyptian abattoirs which turned my stomach.

Shocking - but Egypt is not the only country that is cruel to its animals...........it is spread worldwide.

In the West when teens abuse animals to death, they are watched as potential future sociopathic killers, since a good many serial murderers start out that way.

So why would it be surprising that a culture that espouses suicide bombing and genocide of religious minorities starts out that way too?

People who can torment and kill little animals won't hesitate to do the same to human beings either. You're right Monica, serial killers and psychopaths all tortured animals as kids. They have no compassion. A society that doesn't protect these vulnerable beings only gives a green light to this kind of sick behavior. Sad.

let's not blame only egypt & islam for animal cruelty, it happens everywhere, especially in places where there is no proper education
the care2 people often tend to talk about cultures they donţt know, yet animal cruelty is happening in the US too, and in the developed world too

Rob and Jay B. (121)
Monday November 12, 2012, 2:27 am
Ela V, yes, but in the 'developed world' there are laws against such cruelty and punishments which don't exist in places like this. It seems it is middle class values that are behind movements against animal cruelty, just as we are now seeing in China as its middle class grows, so does its moves to abolish cruelty to animals.

Ela, there is animal cruelty world wide but at least the more civilised countries prosecute where possible.

Peoples, such as the Egyptians, are Muslims whose religion calls for abuses towards women and children of both Muslim and non-Muslim peoples. They rape, murder, stone, hang etc people. Their treatment of animals during their version af ritual slaughter and during Eid is barbaric.

As we know that animal abusers are likely to go on to be murderers and abusers, it follows that Muslims, in this case Egyptians, would be animal abusers with no laws to protect the vulnerable.

If Islam claims to be the fulfillment of all other religions then perhaps they should take a look at the Old Testament to see how "god" wanted animals treated. They hold Moses and Abraham as prophets don't they? The Abrahamic law stipulates that animals were supposed to be well treated; apart from sacrifice of course. Of course animal and child abuse and the abuse and debasement of women are all too common in the human species. it's not just Muslims; it's everywhere. Humanity needs to evolve by modifying the chimp gene.

Ela,

While you are correct that it goes on elsewhere, there is another important distinction to be made.

And that is, in truly humanitarian, civilized societies, there are sociopaths who do this kind of thing IN PRIVATE.

In Egypt -- and it's important to remember that this article is written by an Arab Muslim -- the torture of animals goes on in PUBLIC and most of the people there find it FUNNY AND/OR TOLERATE IT.

This is a frightening indictment against the values of Egyptian society, and we need to take a stand against it.

Cruelty and oppression of the weaker in a society based on religious ideologies is the most insidious and most dangerous. It breaks down the the structure of civilization and leaves all life forms exposed to the whims of religious bullies. It is all about power. Hitler's regime was one such example, where bullies deemed parts of society as inferior and gave themselves licence to unspeakable atrocities. In Egypt and other Islamic countries the very same thing goes on, however those bullies in power are using God as their evil facilitator. Makes me think that he'll really is on earth and God is does not exist.

I meant to say : "hell is really on earth"', darn that auto correct. To add to my previous comment, my heart goes out to the women, children and the millions of voiceless animals that suffer under Islam. I would think if there was a God, he/she would protect those who cry out in pain.

This is so horrible and what kind of monsters will these kids turn into, No one should ever get away with cruelty and torture to animals. A very bad message is sent and violence then continues with animals and then on to people. I don't know what has happened in the world, but there is too much violence and the people that do it must ALWAYS be held accountable and not get just a slap on the hand. The laws need to get tougher and make people responsible for their actions.

Ann Breeden,
"I hope in their evolvement toward a democracy that they implement laws to protect the innocent and voiceless."

Has it perhaps escaped your notice that Egypt is NOT evolving toward democracy, but descending into a theocratic islamist shari'a hell. Alcohol bans, as well as forbidding females from swimming in anything more revealing than a full burka, epidemic sexual harassment &/or assault of women, and rampant burnings and bombings of Coptic churches and villages, is crushing the tourist trade, which is a main stay of their income. Of course if you think it's bad now, wait until Morsi proves he's a real leader by demolishing the pyramids. I guess tourism will really tank then.

They are moving toward full implementation of shari'a, which means women and children will have no protection, so I wouldn't hold out much hope for animals either. Even though domestic animals ARE valued somewhat higher than women under islamic law.

I thought we were seeing something from Cairo Ohio. It's not just Egypt as someone has posted. It is a universal bullying of animals. Mostly from males. gee...wonder why? It may be the male cultures, but where are the mothers of these little monsters? Must be something in the breast milk that makes humans so nasty.

Noted, tweeted, tweeted, shared. Unbelievable; these people are twisted and there society must be barbaric. They have no respect for life. Somehow they need education and be taught a bit of empathy. When children do this, they generally grow up to be murderers and not fit into society. God knows what the murder rate must be in Egypt.

I HAVE been taking a stand against this!!!! I spearheaded a major campaign here several years ago against Al-Sayed Asaweh, the stone-cold Egyptian lunatic who attempted to "fight" an innocent caged lion "to the death" to prove a "point" about Muslim strength and superiority in the Middle Eastern world! Have we all forgotten!? I have NOT!!!!

I also sent out mass emails when Egypt first began falling apart politically begging for money for starving camels and horses at the temples of Giza who, for lack of tourist dollars, were...and still are....losing their lives!!! Have we all forgotten? I have NOT!!!!

Not long ago, I sent out mass emailing posts of the animals in the zoos of Egypt who are being starved to death and exploited in the most horrific of ways by zoo administrators and guards, who starve the animals nearly to death to zoo patrons will "pay" to feed them! A lioness has already starved to death.....God knows how many others are suffering and dying as I type! Have we all forgotten? I have NOT!!!!

Several months ago, I sent out mass posts of the horrific torture of dogs and donkeys at the Cairo school of veterinary medicine begging for signatures against the cruelty and barbarism!!! Donkeys were forced fed with unknown substances, strewn dead inside a chemical lab! A baby donkey was shocked to death on video tape! Dogs were, legs tied, experimented on while still live, no anesthesia, then thrown out of two and three story windows! Have we all forgotten? I have NOT!!!!

Cruelty knows no borders! Muslim, Christian, Pagan, Agnostic, Non-believer.....CRUELTY IS CRUELTY. BARBARISM IS BARBARISM.

EGYPTIAN ANIMALS NEED YOUR VOICE; ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETIES IN EGYPT NEED MONEY AND YOUR HELP. GOD BLESS THE ANIMALS OF EGYPT.

First and Foremost I am a Buddhist and therefore have no particular reason to start defending Muslim views and /or ethics when it comes to animal welfare.

That said, having read so many caustic viewpoints on the Large egyptian Muslim "ideals" on animal welfare, I thought it best to let everyone know that Islam does NOT condone acts of cruelty to animals and rather condemns it!.

Inhumane, despicable cruelty has absolutely nothing to do with Religion, race, Nationality, Creed or Colour but rather on specific individuals and/or certain sections of ANY given society. More pointedly the frame of mind and mentality that has been ingrained ever since birth. To exact my point further please see Islamic views on animals. Whilst the Islamic faith does condone the killing of animals for food and seeking animals out to make a living, it MUST be stressed that Animal Cruelty is Strictly Forbidden and is a major SIN.

Islam and animals

There is not an animal on earth, nor a bird that flies on its wings, but they are communities like you...

Qur'an 6:38

Muslims believe that:

all living creatures were made by Allah
Allah loves all animals
animals exist for the benefit of human beings
animals must be treated with kindness and compassion

Muslims are instructed to avoid:

treating animals cruelly
over-working or over-loading animals
neglecting animals
hunting animals for sport
hunting for food is permitted if the animals are killed humanely
cutting the mane or tail of a horse
animal fighting as a sport
factory farming

Using animals is permitted

The Qur'an explicitly states that animals can be used for human benefit.

It is God who provided for you all manner of livestock, that you may ride on some of them and from some you may derive your food. And other uses in them for you to satisfy your heart's desires. It is on them, as on ships, that you make your journeys.

Qur'an 40:79-80

Muhammad and animals

There are many stories and sayings of the Prophet that demonstrate his concern for the welfare of animals.

Once someone travelling with the Prophet took some eggs from a nest, causing the mother bird great grief. The Prophet saw this and told the man to return the eggs.

When the Prophet was asked if Allah rewarded acts of charity to animals, he replied: "Yes, there is a reward for acts of charity to every beast alive."

The Prophet said "Whoever kills a sparrow or anything bigger than that without a just cause, Allah will hold him accountable on the Day of Judgment." The Prophet explained that a killing would be for a just cause if it was for food.

Everbody here has their voice heard, and opinions made about this absolute brutality towards animals but surely is there is something we the masses can do?? to help these poor innocent animals ???? is there no welfare system in place?, no shelters, is there no way that Care2 members can help here to stop this atrocity???As one lady here said Egypt once adored the cat as a God,my times have changed for the worst.

Beth S. (332)

The Arab Egyptians of today are not the same ancient Egyptians that once worshiped the cat. After Muhammad came a horde of Arabs in the 1400s (A.D.) into Egypt with Arab and Muslim values. These do not mesh with the ancient Egyptians, and is in great part why Salafists in Egypt today (again not descendants of ancient Egyptians) want to get rid of the pyramids, the Sphinx and so on.
